How does one go through life without reading a book?

A friend of mine just told me that someone she knows has never read a book in her life. I was shocked and horrified. I was also disgusted with that person's parent's as they obviously weren't interested in raising a smart, worldly child.
My parents gave me so many books growing up. I read the Little House on the Prairie Series, Anne of Green Gables, and pretty much anything else I could get my hands on at the library.
To be almost 20 and to never have read a book. That is PATHETIC.

Wow. How did this person ever make it through school - we HAD to read whether we liked it or not. I hope this person at least knows how to read - that would be a shame if they didn't (unless they had some disability that they could not read for some reason). I loved books - and our little ones have had books in their hands all their lives and still enjoy books.

That is n ot uncommon in India as we have many illiterate people in our Country. But that is not good if a literate person stays away from reading books. for me books are my good friends and I have git my personal library with collection of books from various subjects!

Today's young people may make never reading the norm. I don't think Shakespeare wrote in text speak.

Hard to be believe that someone who is a literate, hasn't read a book till age of 20.

Some people don't have interest in reading books naturally...like me .
I prefer other hobbies instead
