Gracie: two lives down and hopefully, seven to go

Our cat Gracie is living on borrowed time. Ever since that car crashed into our garage early Christmas morning, Gracie's been a little nervous, understandably. The car went right over where Gracie steps out of her little place in the boat shelter which is connected to the garage. She didn't show up until late that night after we searched and called for her off and on all day. I didn't realize how much I loved that cat until I feared she had been injured or killed. So, avoiding that speeding/crashing car used up one of her nine lives. Then day before yesterday, my husband said, "You know, I haven't seen Gracie today." She likes to roam and hunt in the woods around our house so we weren't too concerned. When she didn't show up, we really started to worry. Last night my husband had left a light on in the little shelter that we keep the riding lawnmower in went out to turn out the light when he heard a meow. Gracie had slipped in there yesterday and my husband didn't know she was in there when he closed the door. There goes life number two. I checked on her this morning and she came running out of her little cat door, appearing to be fine. Sure hope she doesn't use up anymore of her seven lives she has left! Has your pet ever had close escapes from harm?

Cats are survivors, she will hopefully be just fine. Yes my Brendel got out and stayed out all night once, I was up all night as she has no front claws and cannot protect herself. Turned out she was under my neighbor's shed the entire night. She is beautiful!

I hope things will calm down for all of us! My husband will be so glad when the third and hopefully, final adjuster comes so we can get really started on rebuilding our garage.

@sallypup It was quite a shock, but so very thankful no one got killed or even injured.

@1creekgirl Having your garage demolished must have freaked everyone. I can't imagine.

I had cats all the time when a kid, when married when we had children we got our first cat and we had him for years. When we bought out last house and the children were gone, we decided not to get dog or cat so we can go where we want without worrying about pets. Our children all have pets and we enjoy them when they visit, we have babysat several of our grand dogs when the kids traveled... the only unhappy event is our dog was stolen on the first day of hunting in Kansas.

@1creekgirl No, My husband was a football coach in a college and we moved almost every year - better job, more money and his reputation was growing as a great coach... we moved back to that town and college but because we moved so often we rented. The new house was in another neighborhood and the first thing we saw were baby dogs that looked just like the one that was stolen. I had a new baby by then and a three year child and no time for dogs..I was working in the college too. Just because, I walked down the street looking for the owner of the baby dogs running around. My dog saw me and went banana and I turned away and went home. My heart broke for Woods, the dog but I truly didn't want him back... I never talked to the owner and I had to feel he ( the dog) was well treated. I just couldn't bring him back into my life.

Beautiful cat Gracie @1creekgirl . Yeah, I had one swooped up by a Hawk one time. He dropped her from about 20' in the air. She sustained a slash down her back but was otherwise okay.

@1creekgirl I can imagine how Gracie felt. She was scared and probably hid somewhere because it traumatized her. My Sophie has a hard time dealing with things and so she goes to her area to be by herself.

Mocha, one of our four cats, has survived being mauled by a dog (we didn't see it happen but a neighbour did), she went missing for 11 days (as best we can figure she hid under our neighbour's house until she could drag herself home), she also has survived a half dozen or so turns in the dryer. There have been more near misses for her, but those are the most noteworthy.

@SophiaMorros Sometimes Dingleberries need more love and care than the others.

@1creekgirl "Okay" is a bit of a stretch but she IS loved. Her nickname is Dingleberry because she's not the smartest cat in our herd.

If she would let me pet her more, I'd give her a few from you! She just doesn't like a lot of cuddling, I wish she did. All she wants to do is lick!

She is such a beautiful little girl! I hope she remains harm free forever. Our Doodles wandered off into the woods one afternoon for 2 1/2 hours. He’s a house cat and after searching all over, he returned. We were nervous wrecks.

no. But Lily (my black cat) did go missing for three days. She came back home terrified. She used to run from me. But after she came home, we bonded.

Gracie looks much like our little cat and you're right. You don't realise how much you love them till something happens to them. Here is Smoky. We had to have her put down at 16. We both cried.

That has to be quite a traumatic ecperience for any animal but cats seem more skittish.

I sure hope so. She often gets locked in the garage by mistake, but it's just overnight and she's okay.

I closed the young cat of my neighbor in our garage yesterday. I have not noticed that he was following me when I checked something inside. I am glad he has a loud meow.
