It's been hot and the kangaroos are lining up to drink

Half an hour after I took the photo of the kangaroo drinking outside the office window, more does were lining up outside the kitchen window to take their turn at the other birdbath. We have never seen this before. We were moving back and forth in the kitchen preparing our dinner but they stayed at the water and kept drinking. Since our pet sheep, Hercules, hasn’t been around, the water troughs in the paddocks have been allowed to dry out. But as the roos seem to be really looking for water, we will fill them up again tomorrow. It isn’t difficult but it will mean we probably won’t see them often at the birdbaths. Perhaps the birds will be pleased not to have to share their water.

It isn't a big deal for us but would be for them in the heat of summer.

Every time I see kangaroos and other marsupials in pictures, I realize that Australia is quite another world. It is amazing! Your photo is beautiful. Do help those poor animals with the heat!

I'll fill the stock troughs today. The birdbaths aren't big enough to provide water for the number of roos that turn up in our paddocks.

Are you experiencing drought conditions, or are they searching for water just because it's been so hot?

@JudyEv We've got too much water here where I live. There is literally water everywhere. The kangaroos would love living here! haha

@moffittjc It is drinkable though or salt water? They wouldn't like salt water.

The roos are fenced out of many areas and natural water points dry up in our summers. Even dams on farms might become dry. There isn't a drought here but the days are getting hot now so water is becoming more important to them. We don't need to provide food like people do in some of your areas but finding water can be a problem

The poor roos are thirsty..that is one thing about living in a lake area, even though I have a birdbath it is not utilized much at all, there is plenty of water around here.

Some of the lakes around here, not that there are any close by, are salty and in summer farm dams can dry up and water for wild creatures becomes quite scarce.

@playertwo A lot of it is hot and dry and mostly our summers are very hot. But it is a big country so we have a range of climates.

In summer the natural watering points tend to dry up. A lot of the lakes are salty so finding water can get a bit tricky.

@rebelann We have a lot of salt land. Some farmers are fighting to keep their pastures from turning salt too. Much of the land was stripped bare of trees years ago and now the salt is rising all the time.

I can't tell you how much I would LOVE to look out my window and see kangaroos. If I ever win the lottery I SWEAR I am going to travel to Australia, buy an RV there, and travel for as long as they would let me. Gosh, there is so much there to see I am sure. And Australia has always been tops on my bucket list.

@JudyEv Gosh. It would be sooo much fun. If I did it, I'd probably spend about a year there. I think there would be so much there to do and see. It would be a trip well worth it for sure.

What a nice picture, I really enjoy seeing them probably as much as you enjoy taking their pictures. Do you ever put ice cubes in the bird feeder on really hot days? We give Ellie ice in her water on the really hot days, and she plays with the ice cubes and its quite comical to watch her when it all but melts and she looks around as if to ask where did it go to.

I haven't put ice cubes in the water. I think they would melt as soon as they went in or almost. I can imagine Ellie trying to figure out what happens.
