How rude is it to ask someone's age?

I can't say that this is a global idea, but in many places asking the age of someone hurts the rules of coexistence in society.
Complaints usually come from women (one of the worst questions you can ask them), although there are also men who disapprove of such questions.
What do you think? how do you deal when someone asks your age?

It has traditionally been considered impolite to ask a woman's age.

I'm very proud to say I'm turning 41 by February. In this country it's never rude to ask for someone's age.

I have never understood that--in most of my youth, until I was 40, I always said I was older. Now I just tell it as it is though I do it the Chinese way--according to law I am 82 today and will be 83 next month but I have been saying I am 83 since my last birthday.
Also being a Leap Year Baby I can say I am 20 and a half!!

I don't find it rude at all. After all it is just a number and doesn't mean much in the long run. When someone ask I just answer.

I think as one gets older it becomes more of an issue to ask. After all, age is just a number isn't it?
