Over 800,000 federal workers have not been paid but Democrats and president Trump are still playing chicken and waiting to see who blinks first. They are fighting a media war and trying to convince the public the other side is to blame. It's time to negotiate. Which side will say, "let's put politics aside, people's lives are at stake?" I think the Democrats should realize Trump with his petulance and pettiness will never be the Statesman the presidency requires. It would also be a smart political move to be magnanimous. Pelosi should take the high road and be the "adult" in the room. Photo: Wikipedia I found this YouTube link which might soothe the temper tantrum of the "toddler". Although I prefer the original from the movie "South Pacific".

If the executive was dictating to the legislative what it has to do when it does not want to do it, it would be the end of the democracy in USA. The Democrats cannot be "magnanimous" here. This said, I do not think that Trump realizes what he is doing to the civil servants, the situation worsen x10 every week, and at a moment, when the planes will stop to fly because all the traffic controllers are in sick leave he will have to change his strategy, and I believe this point will be reached soon.

@myklj999 He will, he is losing support from his voters about the shutdown, and your air traffic will be paralyzed before March. The airports are already lacking of security agents, and it will increase quickly if they are not paid.

@josie_ I read that Trump lost the support of 8% of Republicans on the shutdown, I do not see why it would not continue to increase, and he is very sensible to these kind of stats. It is not a matter of being representative, it is a basic matter of separation of powers. He is walking on the legislative like he did it for the judiciary. If he manages to do it without being stopped, Americans can say bye to democracy. But it may also turn very bad for him.

I was looking at some surveys. Although the majority blame Trump and the Republicans for the fiasco (53% vs 29%), I think the percentage difference between both side will narrow as the stalemate continues. The blade cuts both ways. BTW, I'm aware the US has a democratic system but is it really a democracy truly representative of the majority?

In February those that get food stamps will not be getting any. Those in assistant living might be evicted.

I hope the situation will not worsen any further. It's time for the politicians to do what they were elected for...public service.

@myklj999 But what happens after February when the provision that allow payments to be made even without a budget no longer apply? Of course no one expect this thing to drag on but with Trump one never knows.

@josie_ It is all on him. A wall is not needed and will not work.

@josie_ I am pretty sure that when the moment comes, his doctors would be the ones who declare him a psychopath. The Buffet at the White House with pizza and hamburger is ridiculous.

Don't you wonder sometimes about the gullibility of people? But I wouldn't go so far as to call Trump a psychopath or sociopath. Although I hope he would be declared legally sane if and when he is tried for allege criminal wrongdoings.

@josie_ I suspect if you said to him "What's a metaphor?" he would probably reply "I don't even know what a meta is never mind what it's for".

@josie_ In which case he would probably accuse me of spreading fake news. Which, of course, is Trump-speak for uncomfortable truths he'd rather forget about.

Yuppers; my solution for the wall is this. Since Trump & his business buddies are Billionaires; they need to build the wall. OR for everybody who thinks Illegals should just walk in......they adopt an Illegal family for 5 years. And the first ones to open their doors should be Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Shumer. @josie_

@josie_ Taxpayer money is already spent foolishly because when the illegals get here, they get everything for free. Housing, utilities, medical, schooling and the majority of them 'never' get citizenship or speak English.....even after being here for 30 years. No excuse.

@nanette64 _If that is the case shouldn't a total revamp of the social benefits system to make it hard for illegals to game the system be a more effective deterrent than building a border wall?

The democrats are not against border security just oppose to spending taxpayer's money foolishly. The wall is an anachronistic solution to a modern day problem which requires a more technological approach.

He's gonna be left inside that wall when everybody exits to the other side Seriously I hope the stalemate ends soon, it's people who would get hurt.

People are getting hurt. It just hasn't reach the tipping point when public opinion will overwhelm Trump's intransigence.

lol Good one. I am so tired of all these shenanigans. Unless they can build a wall like the Great Wall of China that will give plenty of people work then they should just give up on the idea entirely. A cheerleading verse for Trump - no wall, no wall before you take the big fall sis boom bah

The great wall of China was also built by another megalomaniac. It didn't stop foreigners like the Mongolians and Manchus from invading China. I like the cheer verse for Trump and I think "lock HIM up" would be another good one.

I think they should build a wall like this and call it good. Toddler Trump could say he "won," the Republican Congress could say they supported Trump, and the Democrats could say they saved the US a few dollars and some embarrassment.

I don't think it would be appropriate. A "picket fence" is an American icon that symbolize not only suburbia middle class American family life but also neighborliness and trust. Trump's idea of a wall is that of divisiveness and mistrust.

It is ridiculous to build his wall so he can keep a campaign promise. 5.3 Billion dollars? Never. He owns the shutdown.

How does the wall keep you out of Mexico? There are 48 port of entry where people can legally (or illegally) cross the US-Mexico border.
