The root of unbelief is an underlying anger and resentment towards God. People blame God for the injustice and evil happening on Earth, yet this comes from sin, Satan, and our choice as humanity to rebel against God's command. God is not our enemy, He loves us.

I'm an atheist so the root of my unbelief is a sense that there is no empirical reason to believe

It all began with Adam and Eve. They broke God's commandment but tried to hide what they did and did not take any responsibility for what they had done and they each passed the blame on someone else.

I don't believe in God. I don't blame any God or have any anger towards any God.

So if a person does not BELIEVE in God they are mad at him? That just sounds so childish. Most people who don't believe in God or religion have very good reasons and have done their research including searching their hearts and making decisions based on their own life experience. Following your logic as stated above you would then have to say this. The root of belief is FEAR of God.
