Well if that is a bit of an exaggeration, most of the small towns and villages are, for the travelling theatres in this season.
There are two stages side by side and the play opens to a packed audience who keep their eyes wide open. These are meant for the masses so there is the hero, heroine, villain, a comedian or two who for some reason drops into incorrect English and generates a lot of laughs. Fist fights and romantic interludes with song and dance are part of it.
There are special effects and props like a jeep or even railway engine chugging up the stage. Golden cages which lower down lovely fairies.
A couple of hours of pure small town entertainment

In India there is a wide variety.Very much westernised big cities and old fashioned small towns and villages. So different types of entertainment. If one does not look for serious drama ,this is good fun.

@responsiveme I think the attraction comes also from the fact that people watch together and don't watch TV alone at home. Laughing together with others is more fun.

@MALUSE that's right, it's a live show and audience is clapping or sniffling.
Having said that many of those who come to see may not have a TV. So these types of theatres and fairs are looked forward too

These are not permanent theatres, they travel all over. But their sets are impressive.

They are great fun, performances are very professional, it's just that the play in question is not a serious one. More of a crowd entertainment

I remember while at school we had those side shows in front of the closed curtain while behind the curtain arrangements were made for the next scene

Three evenings...,they come with 3 dramas. I always get season tickets. It is good theatre but not serious type.
They also do biopics like Cleopatra, Mary Kom, and dramatized version of novels.
