Books and reading habits

Some days ago my husband and I talked about reading habits. He told me that he didn't read books in his free time when he was a student. He read the books he had to read and that was it. He didn't get interested in books till his early 20s.
I am very different. My obsession with books started really early. My mother started taking me to the library when I was 3 or 4 years old. I couldn't read, but my mother asked me to pick the books I wanted my parents to read aloud. I picked the books based on the pictures on the covers.
When I was in elementary school I visited the library once a week. I went there after school and my mother picked me up a couple of hours later. I borrowed lots of books. I had so many books that I couldn't carry them and I left them in a corner of the library When my mother came she helped me carry the books.
Do you like to read? When did you become interested in books?

I have only read one graphic novel, and that was Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. How about you?

My library has a section with books for young girls. I think that some types of books attract girls more than boys like you said. Maybe the boys prefer a different type of books. I loved to read books for young girls when I was a child. Some of them were about relationships or people who experience problems, and I think that many of those books don't appeal much to boys.

@wanghui When I was a child I didn't see many boys in the libraries. There was a book section for young people, but I think it was most popular among the girls.

I read a lot of magazines when I was younger. I liked the music magazines for young people, but I also borrowed my mother's magazines sometimes. Like you I have always liked to read. I don't read as much as I did when I was younger, but I still read quite a lot.

I borrow a lot of books at the library, and I don't always manage to read them all. In the past I read several books a week, but I am not able to do that today.

@Nevena83 I have that problem when I have depressions. I can't focus on reading. I try, but I don't manage to read much. Do you find it hard to read because you have too many worries or feel sad?

In the past I also read books in my native language. Now I read books in English as well. Sometimes I am able to choose between a translated version or the original version and I choose the original version if I can.

I was so fond of books while I was growing up until I worked and the internet hasn't come yet.
But when it came and I have known of myLot, my extra time was devoted already to myLot, games on my phone and watching the local soaps in a local app where I can watch it anytime on my phone.

I have experienced the same thing. In my childhood there was no internet or cell phones, and I read a lot of books. Today I use the internet a lot. I still read, but not as much as I did in the past when there was no internet.

@SIMPLYD In many ways things are easier now. In the past I had to visit the library if I needed information for a school assignment, now we can find that information from our own home.

I was more like your husband than I was like you. I did read when I was little, but when school began, I wasn't as big of a fan of reading. It was when I was in my 20's that I really began to love to read.

@ScribbledAdNauseum When I lived alone I didn't have a tv either. I spent my time on reading and art. The place where we live now is also a small town, but we have a car so we are able to visit other places.

Yes, it sounds similar to my husband's experience. Today he loves to read, but he didn't start as early as I did. When he was in his early 20s he had a job in a very small town. There wasn't much to do after work, but there was a library. He started to visit the library and he read some great books. That experience made him interested in reading.

@Porcospino When I first moved out on my own, we did not have a tv. Reading was my escape, and it remains my favorite today. I do love the appeal fo a small town, but yes, most do no thave a lot of entertainment to provide.

@LadyDuck I have received many of the books that used to belong to my father. There were several boxes. I didn't go through all of them yet. Some of them are in very bad condition (old paperbacks) but I am definitely going to keep some of them.

@LadyDuck That is sad. When the books are gone it is not possible to get them back. My mother isn't interested in most of my father's books, but I am glad that she gave them to me instead of throwing them.

I have always read in my free time, but in some periods of my life I didn't have much time for reading because I was busy with other activities. For a while I didn't read fiction, but I have started again.

@fluffy69 I read both fiction and non-fiction. At the moment I read more fiction than non-fiction, but I like non-fiction about psychology, other countries/cultures, history etc. What about you?

I loved fairy tales when I was a child. I read the ones by the Brothers Grimm and the ones by Hans Christian Andersen. First my parents read them aloud and when I learned to read I read them myself. You said that you like to write now. What do you write? Do you write stories or other things?

I love to read and learned how enjoyable reading was at a young age. My three daughters are also avid readers but my son never found reading enjoyable. Do you think girls like to read more than boys?

I usually saw more girls than boys in the library. In my family I was an avid reader, but my brother didn't enjoy reading at all. He only read the books he had to read for school.

My grandmother loved to read and she got me interested in reading books. I used to have little books that I would learn how to read from them. I don't know how old I was though.

I experienced the same thing with my grandmother. I remember looking at her book shelves when I was a little girl. I wasn't able to read the books at that time, but I flipped through them and looked at the ones with pictures.
