Every now and then, I seek the help of a recycle items trader to help me in cleaning my yards. In the process of availing her service, I had pried into her life situation. At first, she was aloof, not wanting to share her life's troubles. I assured her that it was all right to narrate her problems, I had the listening ear.
Gradually, she opened up. Life was difficult for the family. Her brother was killed a few years back and another one went missing at the same time. It was like that when one is poor. The poor are adjudged drug dependents right away. Their little lives don't mean any thing at all.
It was heart wrenching but she has wake up every single day and attend to the her physically straining tasks, from house chores to collecting plastic, tin cans and cardboard. Her children and grandchildren need to eat and go to school.
Worse, one son who was supposed to be a help already, for he works as a construction peon, was mentally affected by the energy drinks he took for strength. Now he hides in their home in the slums saying someone is after him for a kill. Sad.
Last Thursday, I asked Arlene how the family is. And she told me a vibrant relationship with God, the Great Creator and the Great Healer. Arlene said every single moment of her life, she offers to God and for all the burdens she is carrying she offers as sacrifice for His greater glory. God has always provided and answered her prayers. One time, she gave ten pesos to a fellow trader, and then a few minutes after, someone saw her and gave her a hundred pesos.
For that day, aside from the wages that I would give her, which is way above minimum, she has free food - lunch and snacks, and take home canned goods.
That is why God loves the poor. The poor is always thankful for their minimal daily blessings.

True.
God gives us graces and therefore, He loves to gratitude in return.

No. But the rich, in their wealth, tend to forget to say thanks.

God loves all. He doesn't care if you are rich or poor.

True, God is love. And yes, He loves us all.
But in the gradation of statuses, the poor is deprived. Somehow, the intensity of their love to God is much more than the rich. That is why God loves them more. Our Lord said "Blessed are the poor for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven."
Which perhaps will bring into question why God is not fair. But that is God's way and His prerogative to give us exactly our situations in life. It is up to us to deal with our blessings the way we want to. That is what the Parable of the Talents is all about.
Loving God, therefore, is a challenge to the rich. Our Lord said to a rich man "Give up your possessions and follow Me." The man couldn't.

Oh no. God has no mercy any longer for those who proliferate evil. Judgment has been passed on them.

Yes, Mitchelle, we need to know and love the poor. As our Lord says, the kingdom of heaven is already theirs.

I was humbled by her story. Yes, this poor lady is admirable. Her tremendous fame despite poverty puts me really to shame.
