Let the punishment fit the crime

I am a believer in the old-fashioned biblical way of 'an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth' . If someone commits a crime then the courts should impose a suitable sentence.
I'm not too concerned about crimes against property (theft and such) but crimes against the person (physical violence) should be severely punished. The modern view of 'rehabilitation' of violent offenders is all very well but it must be impressed on them that if they harm someone physically then they will suffer for it physically.
What say you?

@ThreeTeddies I fully agree and every crime (even minor) should be punished.

@LadyDuck Every crime should have a reciprocal punishment

I have to kind of disagree with you. Not all crimes should have a harsh senses. Not all physical crimes are meant to hurt someone some are accidents. I do believe in punishment but you should also look at all the facts try to see the story form all sides. As a parent I have to choice what I feel is more fitting for my own based on what they did and getting the story from all of the kids or catching them in the act. Courts should also be like that they is why we are judge by or peers not one single person.

I agree. However, as Christians, we are also to forgive. God said in Deuteronomy and Hebrews that vengeance belonged to Him. There have been many times when I took a step back and allowed God to take control of the situation and He always did.

@just4him The interpretation of the phrase 'an eye for an eye' I have chosen to apply is a literal one but I'll give you the fact that Christianity, Judaism, Islam and probably most religions interpret it differently. That, however, doesn't influence my feelings on the subject. It has been my experience that if I turn the other cheek that one gets slapped too! As for stepping back and letting God intervene when someone is assaulting my wife and daughters - no, not gonna happen. I will do all in my power to save them up to and including taking the life of the perpetrator. At least will prevent him from doing it again.

@JudyEv It's the leniency I obect to. Far too often the emphasis is placed on the offender whom 'society done wrong' in some undefined way instead of on the victim and their family.

@ThreeTeddies Those who lost a loved one through crime must feel totally betrayed at some of the sentences given.

I think any crime is bad. Those that try to murder someone should be punished to the full extent.
