They have a meeting here in the shelter each morning that is for the Veterans of the Service. The rest of us are asked to leave for this, patient client confidentiality and all of that. It doesn't take long, maybe ten minutes or so, and it is irksome but not worth raising a fuss over. Some of the vets have taken a superior attitude because of this, and today there was a bit of an arguement between two of the men because the non vet did not feel like going outside. He had his headphones in, so it really was not that big of a deal since he was not listening to what they were saying. The problem is that the young fellow that told him to leave is not an employee of the coalition. Too many chiefs, as the saying goes. I always try and crack a joke when situations like this arise. I tell people that they need to let the grown ups handle things. He is still very upset. I used to let these sorts of things bother me, but now I just ignore it. If they don't wear a nametag and get a paycheck their words are of no concern to me. I also think he is a bit hungover, so his fuse is a little shorter. I am glad I don't drink anymore, those morning afters were quite the punishment. The truth of the matter is that at the end of the day we are all homeless. We need to build eachother up instead of try to tear one another down. And in my opinion it does cause discord to have these meetings that exclude half of the residents. It used to be just once a week and now it is every day. But I keep this to myself. I don't get a paycheck here. Yet. I am born to lift spirits of those that cannot lift themselves. Some are just more stubborn than others.

There are programs that are available to veterans, but if they aren't going to take advantage of it then why keep having the meetings? How many times can you tell someone, "You can sign up for job assistance classes at the local VA office"? As the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Especially not a stubborn horse.

most of the vets here are already retired, and their pension just isn't enough for housing. But I agree with you, I think the bottom line is that most of them don't want to leave. They have no family and their wives have passed on and they don't want to be alone.
