what do you enjoy at work?

I've been working at the same office in our city government for more than 15 years now. Some of my colleagues have gone to other offices, some went t work elsewhere. That means I worked with some of the good workers in our city government. That makes my work enjoyable because I could work well with them at both professional and personal levels. I was lucky to have a slave driver boss who compensates me well. Under his tutelage, I rose six grades higher. This is really not much but since workload is manageable and enjoyable, I love my job. The bulk of my work is maintaining our city database, which would be used to update our city profile and the formulation of medium-term and long-term plans. These plans are usually a collaborative effort with other brilliant people from different offices.

After I finished my academic requirements for my Master's program in Economics, I came back to my small community college to teach. For fifteen years, I taught Economics, Statistics, Management and Finance courses. Conflict with the unreasonable new "owners", and the uncompensating and uncomfortable work environment made me look for work elsewhere. I landed a job at our local government offices. Pay was a lot better, and so was tenure.

It is a tradeoff actually --- having a regular office job which pays regularly but had strict hours, or work at home at your own pace and which pays according to some expected work done. Here you are the boss and dictate your own hours, and you can also somehow dictate your price.

some people say they learn more/grew more/developed skills under strict teachers and strict bosses.

I had a very stern teacher in my elementary grades. who would make us stand if we fail to pass assignments and homeworks. Or if we fail to answer graded recitation. We also get hit by pieces of chalk if we do not pay attention to him. I credit him for teaching music --- how to read notes and sing notes with the right time signatures. But then again, I think I began to hate Math because basic concepts just wouldn't get through within a given time period. So maybe, strict mentors may get mixed reviews.
