It was and still is a horse country, you hear planes several times during the day flying in for buying and selling race horses.
My husbands sister lives in Ocala so we stopped and stayed with them before and after our vacation on Marco Island. I love where they live, its a huge house and land all around.
While waiting for our pickup to take us to Orlando to catch our plane back to Canada, I took pictures of one of the fields next to the house. We used to see horses there but this year there were cows.
The cows were left alone for a long time and I enjoyed the quiet of cows on a pasture. For a few days we watched a man on a horse with two small dogs. The dogs were rounding up the cows. I think the dogs were being trained...but that's just my opinion.
For a big city, there is a lot of pasture for the cows and horses and dogs too.
Here in Canada its snowing, freezing, and raining. I wish I was still in Florida.

I really appreciate when someone posts pictures like this. I get nostalgic sometimes, i grew up in a rural area just like this, and for 22 years i have been stuck in the city. Pictures like this somehow makes me happy. So, is this where your sister lives? What a beautiful and peaceful place with clean air

My sister in law does live there, the grounds are gorgeous and the pastures all around here are interesting to watch.

Never think of Florida as being horse country.

I never thought that either until I saw hundreds of race horses in that pasture a few years ago. Now its cows, I still like watching them, they are so curious...

Your picture looks like what I see when I travel surrounding areas here. We have lots of farms and cornfields.
Not fun getting back to Canada and being hit with that wintry mess.

I grew up in upstate NY and we had fields and farms all around us then too. it was not fun coming back, its just so cold. Its snows, it drops ice everywhere and today I saw flakes again but at least not many....I will be very happy when spring flowers show up.

@PainsOnSlate many of us are anticipating the arrival of spring. The older I get the more I hate these winters.

@JudyEv That is so interesting, I didn't know that. In the summer we see a lot of caravans and motor homes. My sister and I thought of getting one to camp in but even in our old age, we love sleeping in a tent.

@PainsOnSlate They're synonyms. Grey nomads have caravans or motor-homes and go off tripping round Australia chasing the sun and warmth. They don't relocate so much like Americans/Canadians(?) go to Florida but they travel round.

I haven't been to Ocala in many years. Lots of people seem surprised to learn that Florida is home to many cows and horses. Guess it's mainly thought of as beaches, retirement and vacation country.
Stay warm my friend. We aren't freezing here but it rained all night. Cold today but nothing like you've got.

We do go south for the sun and the beaches. Ocala is where my sister in law lives in the middle of the state. We visit her and then go to the beach and come back to her place before going home....

I was happy to be in Florida, its a lot warmer there than here. The snow is melting today so that is a good sign spring might be just around the corner..

Its hard to go outside, its just too cold and slippery. I am going to the Y in a half hour but I know they will have clear walkways and I am looking forward to the steam room...

@PainsOnSlate Ocala is the Horse Capital of the World, it is no wonder you saw lots of horses, there are horse related events all year long.

For a big city, it is something you would not think was around. I loved it when my sister-in-law views were of race horses. They were fantastic and so beautiful. I have to say the cows were more curious about what the people beside their pastures are doing and paid more time watching the humans than the horses..
