When in Egypt, it is a must to try the following dishes and delicacies:
- Ful. Slow cooked fava beans, mixed with tahini and olive oil, flavored with salt, pepper, cumin, chili pepper, and lime. The Alexandrian version includes tomatoes and white onions.
- Ta´meya. Also known as falafel, this is ground fava beans and green herbs, then deep fried. Ful and Ta´meya are traditionally eaten together in the morning with eggs, cheese, bread, and salad.
- Koshari. A mixture of rice, macaroni, lentils, and chickpeas. It is flavored with tomato sauce and/or garlic vinegar, and garnished with crispy fried onions. It is best eaten with crispy fried bread.
- Mashi. Vegetables, such as eggplant, zucchini, cabbage leaves, and grape leaves, stuffed with rice and ground meat.
- Pasta Bechamel. The macaroni and cheese of Egypt. Layered pasta and ground beef, then topped with bechamel sauce.
For the meat lovers, there is always the grilled kebab, kofta, tarp, and lamb ribs.
Where to eat:
- Bashandy in Cairo serves the best ful and ta´meya
- Aroos Elbahr in Suez has the best seafood dishes, especially the seafood soup
- La Poire and Nola (any location) have the most amazing cakes and pastries.
- El Dahan grills the best meats.
