Thomas Hard was an important Victorian novelist and poet who lived in Dorset in southwestern England, on the way to Land's End from London. His father was a common laborer, and Hard ordinarily wrote of common people in the town and countryside where he live. Hardy is one of two people whom I know of who had his heart buried in a different place from the remains of his body. The other person was Chopin. Chopin's body is buried in Paris, while his heart is in a column in a church in Warsaw. Hardy's ashes were buried in Westminster Abbey in the Poet's Corner. His heart was buried in the courtyard of a country church in the countryside near Dorset. I took this picture of the Hardy house a few years ago on an author's tour in England.

It is a really good novel, but like most of Hardy's novels, ends very sadly for the protagonist

Am just wondering, why did they take their hears out of their bodies and buried them somewhere else?

in our mythology, the heart, the seat of love, is the most important part of the body. They wanted their hearts to be buried in the place which they loved best, and their bodies in more celebrated places. Poet's Corner in Westminster Abby began with the burial of Geoffrey Chaucer, the Father of English Literature. Chopin's heart is buried in a church in Warsaw, his country's capital.

It looks like a beautiful home. I didn't know anyone who had their heart buried in another place other than with their body unless they were organ donors.

One of mine too. My last Vic Novels paper in college was on Jude, The Obscure, a sad tale.

It is one of those 'countryside' villages in England that are so very charming. Our guide there showed here various scenes in novels took place.
