Did DVR technology change TV forever?

There was a time (when I was a kid) that you watched TV when it came on. If you missed the show, you had to wait for the summer.
In fact, for the most part, you sat and watched the show. You ran to get food or use the facilities during commercials.
Now, with the DVR and Streaming, you can pause at any time. In fact, the incidence of live event viewing other than major events is down.
How about the rest of you, do you use a DVR?

No, but that's only because I don't have one. I pay for Sling TV at the end of the year so that I can use DVR for some of my shows.
I grew up when VCR's were a thing. We still ran to the use the facilities or get snacks during commercials, the adults got to record shows more than the kids did.
Now DVR's allow people to sit on their behinds for hours on end, catching up on shows.

@DocAndersen It definitely has. I will binge watch occasionally, but I don't watch that much television anyway. I binge watched Lucifer this past week. The only other thing I watch is the news at 9 pm.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I understand that my kids don't watch TV at all. I guess things are changing again!

Honestly I think of Netflix and Hulu/Amazon as DVR 2.0!

@DocAndersen I remember in the 50's when we only had 1 channel and the TV was black & white.

It is amazing when you think about it. Live TV isn't what it once was.

@LadyDuck My grandfather won a color TV in a bowling tournament. He actually gave it to my parents when I was born. But I remember watching TV and turning the dial by hand (no remote) and only have 5 choices of channels!

@DocAndersen Please don't be sorry. I can imagine I'm about the only one that didn't know what a DVR was. I really must come out from under my rock one day. :)

sorry DVR is a digital video recorder. Originally introduced by a company called Tivo. It allows you to live record a show onto a harddrive. You can also pause live TV!

By forever, it means people won't go back to the way it was. You are saying people will someday return to live TV only?

No, I don't but, eventually, I will. I used to record with my VCR but now that is outdated. My son knows how to use the DVR and I think I will get some useful tips and I agree with you, it is a blessing to have it. I like the option of being in control and pausing my tv shows. Also, the benefit of recording it when I am not home. Thanks for sharing.
