It may seem like a silly question to many people, but... The simple act (for most of people) of swimming is still not something that everyone knows how to do.
However, not being able to learn to swim may be related to other complicating factors (as a strong trauma in childhood, for example).

Not only do I know how to swim, but I am a swim instructor, and a former competitive swimmer. My current job is managing the aquatics division of our city's parks and recreation department, so teaching swim lessons to the public is one of our core services. Last year, we taught close to 2,000 people how to swim.

I can swim but I am not a strong swimmer because I have really bad shoulders, knees, and ankles. But I can float! Most of my family sinks like rocks.

I was taught to swim but do not swim well. I love to swim so when I have the opportunity I like to use pools.
