nothing is mandatory. all these are man-made traditions. because the color is associated with passion. and passion can be used to denote love, a red rose is used symbolically to show your love to your loved ones.

I've never even heard of someone giving a red rose while proposing, I think it'd be a nice gesture though (considering the red rose symbolizes love.)

i wouldnt say that it's necessary but it wont hurt to have red roses while proposing :D it's more romantic...roses are meant to create the romantic ambience there

I never got any roses when I was purposed to! My husband isn't much into giving flowers, I do get a lot of cards though.
