What does writing mean to you?

I love to write my thoughts, I guess I did that ever since I knew to write.
I just write my thoughts randomly, sometimes from these are born some form of poetry, at other times it just makes me feel like I have down loaded what was heavy on my mind.
Mostly, I like to write when I am happy . I love happy poetry and cheerful short stories.
Sometimes scribbles and doodles around a word I am contemplating on take a form of art.
Most often I find great joy in writing, especially those thoughts that come up when I am in my garden or taking a stroll in a park or some calm place.
What is writing to you? Is it a hobby? Is it therapeutic? Is it your bread and butter ? or.....

Writing is my way of making a passive income online. I also write for various sites to get some money and I write poetry and blog. I have two books of poems published.

@RasmaSandra I know, I have seen you on various sites as well. Are your poetry books ebooks or they are normal books?

It has changed over the years. I remember when I was fifteen and began to write in earnest. I was so excited and had thoughts of "the great American novel". But, through the years I have gone from avid reader to having a cataract that makes it impossible for me to read much anymore at all. I was writing some articles and enjoyed that but all that has changed. Now my depression is such that I can't keep track of things in my head that well and so serious novel writing is beyond me now. Getting old is the pits.

@celticeagle I am so sorry. That is a very difficult place to be in. I guess we are all going to get there someday.

I do know I have a best seller in me but it may never see the light of the day!

Writing is a way for us to express what we feel, what we think.

Writing is a lot of things to me, and I would love it to be my career/sole source of income! I do write professionally but don't currently get enough work for me to give up my 'proper' job. I used to write a lot of poetry. I still write a little but, it seems, I wrote more of that when I was at a more negative period in my life.
Now, I write a couple of articles for various businesses and websites while working on a long-term project of my own.

@sofssu Yes, I am a part-time freelance writer. I don't think we're allowed to link to our own sites on here but I might find a couple and pop them in a discussion another time.
It's really hard to take up writing as a career, especially if you are not in a position to take the risk of leaving another job. I've been doing it for years and get trickles of work. Very few people/companies want to pay what writers are worth.

@pumpkinjam I totally agree with that.. I write on third party sites. But they pay you peanuts.

@pumpkinjam Its more like a part time job for you then. I'd love to read some of your poetry. I would love too to take up writing as a career, but I really need to upgrade myself.

That is a very good question and one I'm struggling to answer with any clarity.
I suppose the only way I can put this is writing is joyful, stimulating, frustrating and depressing in equal measures.
I'm glad I don't rely on writing for my income otherwise I'd probably have some sort of breakdown.

What do I get out of my writing?
I used to hate writing, when I was at school.
Then in my later life, I moved to liking it for a while, for a period of around fifteen years, I suppose, until now again, it's more love/hate now.
It's more of an effort now than it was in those 15 years of passionate writing.
Writing fulfils many credentials of a person, linking himself or herself to different facets, to be experienced in different ways.
This constant change and new felt creativeness from writing is what spurs on most people to write.
When you are being creative, you are most alive, and you feel good about it too.

Having tools that you like using to write with helps too, at least for me it does.

@innertalks I agree with you creative writing makes me come alive, gives me a kind of satisfaction that none of the other things i do seems to give me.
I hope you keep writing though its is more of an effort for you now.

@sofssu Actually, yes, when I am feeling a bit down, it gives me such a lift of satisfaction too, that nothing else quite matches either.

Now I am only here and make do with the culture of the site.
In a way, each site has a soul and we have to fit in than strike a discordant note when we do not align with its ideals.
Though I stick to my topics, it is more of tweets at times here!
I try my best to go with the flow.
I know Steve, it is not easy for you too - siva

I think I had a flair for writing since young and had won some competitions when in college.
Then it had to take a backseat as work and family commitments consumed my time.
I could stretch my legs only during the last ten years and took to online sites to air my views.
I love the tête-à-tête with the like-minded. It was in greater depth in few other sites.
No short stories or poetry though tried the latter due to the promptings of a few - siva

I also tried my hand at poetry, and short stories, on some other sites too. I have written a few here too. This site is pretty much a free for all. We can write what suits us, and find our own niche of sorts too.

@dya80dya Well crying is very therapeutic too. you need to know how to deal with those emotions or it will indeed make you depressed. Perhaps you should focus on the better things if you feel this way. One pill doesn't cure all. The same technique doesn't work for everyone the same way.

I have always used writing as a kind of therapy. When I write it down, it not only unburdens me, but it helps me to clarify exactly what the problem is. Sometimes, when I've written it down, it doesn't seem so awful as it did spinning around in my head.
