Finally, a decent nursing home

My aunt (my mother's sister) has been showing signs of dementia for a while now. Five of their seven siblings have had Alzheimer, but my cousin has been so good to his mama. He's done everything possible for her, especially since he's not married, but it finally got to where she was falling a lot and not sure if she really was eating her meals at times. My cousin decided he had to finally put her in a nursing home. He checked out several and I don't know how they are where you live, but around here they can be quite awful. He found one in a small town about twelve miles away and she moved into it last Friday. Yesterday, I picked up my uncle (her brother, who also has Alzheimer) to go see her for a visit. I was very surprised and pleased to see it was a rather nice place, as nursing homes go. Neither she nor my cousin are wealthy, so it's not an exclusive home for rich people. The front area when we walked in was decorated, the walls were freshly painted, I think, the staff seemed caring and friendly, and there wasn't that odor that is often present in facilities like that. My aunt's room was small, but a nice size. Her son had moved a recliner into it, along with a small TV and mini fridge, several framed photos of family, and did all he could to make it comfortable and seem almost like home. Of course she wants to go home. I'm sure I would, too. But it will most likely be my aunt's home for however long she lives. I was always so discouraged whenever I visited anyone in a nursing home, but I told my husband, this one would be where I'd want to go if that were the only choice for me. I guess the older you get, the more you think about things like this. I'm just glad to know that not all nursing homes are horrible. I know my husband and I will take care of each other as long as possible, and our children will take us if needed, but you never know what the future holds.

My elderly mother has dementia, and it was getting worse with each passing year. My brother, and my two aunts (my mom's sisters) have been doing everything they could to care for her, but finally decided it was time to move her to a nursing home. We made appointments and visited every nursing home in the county, and we were appalled at what we saw. We finally found one we liked, and of course it had like a 3-year waiting list to get in. Finally, my brother said he would rather just bite the bullet and keep caring for my mom himself. He said the assistance he can provide--even thought very cumbersome at times--was better than anything she could get in a nursing home.

@1creekgirl I'm glad he is too. And it's a roll he has embraced. I live 4 hours away, so it is much harder for me to help out, other than financially. My brother is essentially a hermit, so it is a roll that works out perfectly for him. It gives him a sense of purpose, as he likes to tell me.

The local nursing home is very nice. They have a beautiful park, the rooms are of a nice size. They have a restaurant where everyone can eat. We go time by time, just to check how it is. Aging you thing about "what next".

@1creekgirl It is the one of our small town, it is very nice, even if I surely prefer to be in my own home.

That sounds like a much nicer place than around here. It definitely enters our mind as we age.

I am glad to hear he found her a nice one to move into, they are really hard to find. Tell him to watch her stuff as other patients like to wander into others rooms and take things they think are theirs.

My mother in law was always terrified of going into a nursing home. Her daughter lived with her and kept her at home until it became impossible to care for her.

So glad a nice place was found for her. There are so many that are just horrible in our area. It is very hard to think about.

I am so glad that the nursing home was nice, it is so hard to find good ones, it is the same around here.

It's very hard for the family to decide that a nursing home is needed as well as for the person having to live there. I'm happy that your aunt is in a nice place and that she'll get acclimated and enjoy it.

As you say, some are much better than others. I don't anyone wants to end up in a nursing home but sometimes there is very little option.

It's a terrible thing when an elderly person has to leave their home. Nothing can replace the atmosphere and warm feelings of being in one's home. But sometimes, we have to make a decision in that person's best interest. I hope your aunt adjusts to her new surroundings.

It's great that he found this place ..my mom was in an assisted living and it was really nice but really expensive too and she wasnt even truly happy there i guess no place really feels like home ..so my mom now is living in north carolina with my sister and doing well she loves it there.. And is saving a ton of money from the assisted living fees..

It's always a blessing when a person can live with family, but sometimes that's not possible. Glad your mom can be at your sister's.
