Art is Therapy

March 11, 2019 8:49am CST
I've found myself deeply in love with creating lately. I've loved to observe art for many years, as far back as I can remember. Well, college days. That's when I was first introduced to fine art. Growing up in a small town meant little to no art. No art classes. No art appreciation. College. A friend had a Monet print in their room. I loved it. So that's where it started. My love affair with art. But talent of my own? Never thought it was there. Always encouraged my kids to draw, to paint, to create. A few years ago, I decided to try to teach myself to draw. I pulled out my kids' drawing book & started to learn. Along the way, I realized that art would calm my anxiety. Anxiety is something often simmering in the background of my life. Drawing became just a part of it. I found the colors especially soothing: markers, chalks, paints. My work still looks like a beginner, but I'm ok with that. A few years ago, I didn't htink I could draw, PERIOD. Now I can actually draw a face that looks like who it is supposed to be. And it makes me happy. Creativity is within each of us. Sometimes it just takes awhile to find it.

I’m happy for you. As they say, it’s never too late to try something new or something that you wanted but never really had the chance or guts to do so. This can be my inspiration since I’d like to try drawing too.

I started w/a book called Drawing with Children by Mona Brooks. you should look at it. It's a great starting point.

It sounds like you are much more creative than you ever thought and that it is a good way channel some of the stress in your life.

It's nice that you take time to do this. My eldest has started to draw herself. She'll just find an image online, and just draw it. She won't trace it. She'll actually just draw it herself. She has it the same way you have it in your picture. And she's really good. She's got talent there.

That's great that you've tapped into this talent. I do not think that I have the talent to draw.

I think anyone can practice and find the skills w/in. Im sure some are more natural at it, but I think most artists just practice and practice and practice.

Well practice makes perfect. Are you into abstract painting or what?

I just am playing w/all sorts of art. I've definitely done some abstract. I've attempted more realistic, but my abilities are still pretty raw. I'm playing w/watercolors, acrylics, chalks mostly. It's fun

@jillybean1222 which is much easier for you: watercolors, acrylics, chalks or charcoal?

@Janet357 I like them all in different ways.... I love chalks for a simple landscape. Watercolors are beautiful, but hard for detail, in my opinion. I love the lines of charcoal. Acrylics seem to be a little easier for detail, so if I'm wanting more detail, acrylics.

I think most of us can learn anything we have our hearts set on. I've drawn people before, when I was very young and my faces weren't recognizable, not were their limbs uniform.
