I would use the backpack ones if I were to ever. They wear a backpack and the leash is in it. I would only use it if
A) we were in another city on a trip and that city is bigger then ours or more populated.
B) big and busy carnivals, we call ours here the exabition.
Kids are sometimes unpredictable, you never know when they will just run off or run into the street. When I'm driving And see a parent with child walking on the sidewalk I always slow down just incase.
One thing I've always done with my kid is when walking the street I started with two blocks to the store, everytime even if there is no cars I always made him stop and look both ways and asked him if it was good for us to go. Also when there are the crosswalk lights I always explain even now I explain what the stop hand means and the walking person means. I always make sure he is alert of his surroundings for his safety.

Its safety for the child, some places are very crowded and there are so many people snatching little ones that this is the best way for a parent to protect them. When my son was little he would always get ahead of me, times were different back then and one didn't have to worry so much, now you can't trust anyone. Better to be safe and have a hold on your child than sorry later when they are gone.

What are the circumstances?
A buddy bracelet that attaches a child to the parent? A harness with a short lead?
I'm one of those horrible people who had my daughter on a leash when she was little.
It kept her safe, but gave her lots of room to roam. I was a busy mom with three children under the age of 4....a busy street and only two hands.
If that makes me a hateful person so be it....my children were safe.

The point is that some of he people that I seen were using the leash in a abusive way.

I used one with my oldest son when I travelled by myself with him. He was inclined to wander off, follow strangers the whole nine yards. The only way to keep him safe was to have a means of holding on to him at all times.
