My current theme of favorites with "eyes" in the title is broken into two segments: hits, and obscure songs. Some of the hits you could see coming (not an intentional pun), but here in the obscure list you have no idea of what will show up. Case in point: today's song. What to follow a bluegrass/old-time fiddle song with? What else!
#9: Dry Your Eyes - Neil Diamond
This is one of those incredible songs where you interpret the lyrics different ways. In many ways, the song speaks to the beauty of music ("dry your eyes, take your song out") and the numerous losses we've had in music ("sing it like you know he'd want it").
Robbie Robertson, the frontman of The Band, co-wrote this song with Neil Diamond and produced the album it appeared on. Robertson said his part of the song was inspired by Rev. Martin Luther King. That's easy to see in the lyrics as well ("and it was more than being holy, and it was less than being free").
Either way, it's a great song.

I first heard this when Diamond performed it in The Last Waltz with The Band. That's what I said when I heard it: WOW.

One I haven't heard! I wonder if he's still writing great songs these days?

He announced he had to retire last year due to Parkinson's disease. In the announcement he said that, though he may not tour anymore, he'd still be writing.

I think you said you're not much on The Band. Hang on, there's one that you do know coming soon on this side of the list.
