Counting Kitties

Last night we lay in bed and talked about various pets we had owned. I lose track of the number of cats and kittens we had growing up. At one point we had five siamese cat mothers. My mom was a type of hoarder. When I was little she did this with parakeets. I was eight or so when we had all the cats. She would try to make sure they all were bred to Siamese males, but one cat always avoided that. So all these mamas except her had tiny white kitties, cause that is how Siamese babies look. Her kittens were black and black tiger striped. Her name was Shari. One afternoon she went around and stole all the other babies and put them all in her box. Her problem was solved when my older sister had a friend with an orphaned litter of kittens. One of them was white. Shari was happy. Her non conformity was tragic in a way. She would go out and catch wild things and bring them home for everyone to eat. We believe she brought them a poisoned rodent or rabbit. Many of them became ill and died. We always had too many or too much of things that ended up costing us time, money and peace of mind.

Those poor kittens. You telling about the cat bringing wild things to her young reminds me of something. I saw it through facebook, a dog who had all of it's litter sold, or so the humans thought. The cunning mom hid away one of her pups and brought it food. The humans found out and devised a plan to rescue the pup. They let the mom keep her little one, which I thought was very nice. We don't think about the souls that our little furry friends have. How they would and can miss their off-spring.

Or even about jealousy and envy. I have always had my animals spayed and neutered.

I know an animal hoarder now. But her husband does keep her in check some.

The thought was always "I shall breed them and sell them". You do not make money that way, not at a home just with a few kitties.

@GardenGerty That is this womans thoughts with her chickens. But she runs them all together so they end up mixed breeds and not worth very much.

When I started reading your post, I was thinking you count kittens instead of sheep to get to sleep...

Little white fluffies with blue eyes. Mom always wanted an orange point and a lilac point. I always thought Himalayan was pretty.

You only have to keep the number of pets that you care of. Too many is a problem.

I was a child. This was my parent's choice. It bears really heavily on why I have always limited my pets. I have never had more than three cats at a time. Always spayed or neutered when old enough. Not enough resources to care for so many.

@GardenGerty The cats of my neighbors are also spayed or neutered, it is the law here if you want to let your cats go out of the house.

My parents never allowed us to have a cat because of litter boxes but we did have several dogs

I prefer litter boxes over having to deal with poop in the yard. There are many reasons to make different choices with pets.

@GardenGerty I agree. I did have a cat once about 20 years ago. She was a calico and her name was Patches.

When I was growing up, I had two cats (not at the same time), but I couldn't keep them in the house. So I didn't really take care of them. I also had a dog, but we didn't keep him very long, but I have a fear of dogs. My step-father gave me snakes, but I couldn't keep them either. Now I only have Lily.

It is certainly possible to have too many pets of any sort.

Oh man, I know it You learn a lot, but it also costs a lot. If you cannot feed your own family you really should not have pets.
