What is a person saying when they say that they are a spiritual person? Is that different from someone that has a religion? Are spirituality and religion two different things? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *This note was added on April 11, 2 PM: I searched the King James Version and found the word religion 5 times, the word religious 2 times, the word spiritual 26 times, and spirituality zero times.

@1hopefulman i don't think so, man has a soul or spirit even if he does not know or does not believe he has one lol. Having the Spirit of God I think is different.

I define myself as Spiritual - because I'm not religious but I do believe in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit But that is only my definition.

@1hopefulman While I haven't tried all religions out there - the ones that I have tried- have seemed to make the experience more about "their" agenda. Them vs. everyone else. I have also many times felt like simply a number sitting in a seat at services. So... religion - I don't think is the way that makes me feel close to God ... though I mean no offense to those who have found it to be their lifestyle.

I prefer the word relationship rather than religion personally, I am not religious. I have an amazing relationship with Jesus! Wish people would realize THAT difference. =) Anyway, being spiritual to me makes me think of being in our spiritual mindset which is AMAZING! But people throw that word around a lot so it has different meanings to people.

@1hopefulman I don't follow rules because I'm "supposed" to. I follow Jesus and the commandments because I love Him and I WANT to! Religion usually means following rules out of fear of what others will think if you don't, or doing something because we were born into it.

Back in times spirituality was associated with religion. In our days, it can refers to a personal experience of, such as a belief in a supernatural or an encounter with one's own "inner dimension. Definitely you can be spiritual and not religious

@1hopefulman Yes, someone can be spiritual but do not believe in any religion, religion and a superior entity are not exactly the same thing. Someone may believe that a God exists but do not believe in any form of religion.

Yes, they are different. It is possible to be both religious and spiritual as they are not mutually exclusive. It is, however, also possible to be one or the other and not both. I consider myself spiritual but don't follow any religion.

I understand it as, as we feed our body the same way our soul also need something and when we feed our soul, it is called spirituality. I may be wrong, but this is what my thinking. It may be like prayers, chanting mantras, reading a Holy book etc.

I think that people use the word spiritual in more than one way. It could refer to religion, but it isn't always the case. I know that Wayne Dyer often used the sentence: "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience" (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin)

After reading all the comments, it seems that there are many different meanings and may have to ask for more information from everyone that says that to understand what they mean. What do you think that means? "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience" (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin)

@1hopefulman I think it means that our human experience is temporary. One bodies don't last, but we are more than our bodies. The other part doesn't have that kind of limits.

It is, spiritual means you feel connected to the universe and treat your surroundings as such where religion is the belief in a man made god. How I always looked at it and if someone sees it different please enlighten me. I was religious for a minute now I am spiritual like Native Americans. That tree and wolf crap is no joke from what they showed me.

The church have religious doctrines and practice rituals. In my youth I learn these teachings and participated in church ceremonies. But the idea of spirituality was never emphasize. Priest sermons were mostly about our sinfulness that only made us feel guilty and prod us towards the church for our "salvation". Until now I'm not sure if the word "spirituality" is the appropriate description for man's capacity to reach a higher level of awareness through his intellect. "Faith" as preach by the church is diametrically oppose to the rational use of our mind in the search for better understanding of ourselves.

@1hopefulman _I have not given up looking for answers to philosophical questions. Religion is a system of beliefs just like other schools of thought, esoteric or otherwise. But the institutes that propagate religion do not encourage critical thinking or reasoning but insist their followers rely on "faith" which is really nothing more than blind obedience.

Real love always is a connector not a disrupter or a disjoiner
I am neither religious, nor spiritual. I am more a seeker, aspiring to be a lover of God, of life, and of everyone else, too. Here is a short parable about the difference between being religious and spiritual, or just being a seeker, or lover of God. Charles was brought up in a very religious family. His father could quote the bible, verse and chapter, at any time, when he wanted to push home a point or two, in his favour. Charles thought that he did not want to ever be religious in the way that his father was, so Charles went out on his own to try to find his own spiritual path. Religions are a path of their own. Charles wanted to find his own path, which suited him best. For years then, Charles pursued the spiritual life, but like his father, in the end, after more than forty years of searching, he found himself rather knowledgeable like his father, but still unchanged in his love for God. Love for God is the greatest factor of life. Whether one is religious, or spiritual, without love, we are largely just pushing bricks in a pigsty, and not really constructing a life for God. Love is the real brick that we must use, not anyone else's bricks, as supplied to us from religions, or spiritual paths either. Love, and all will be provided to you, and you will live your life as it was meant to be lived. Because, believe in God or not, love is the real energy in the Universe. Nothing else compares to love, or can really ever come close to ever really overpowering it, once you love without ceasing. The Christian Bible tells us this too, in Saint Matthew's gospel, chapter 6, verse 33. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Now it is said that God is love, so I would read this verse like this too. "Seek ye first love, and all these things shall be added unto you." @innertalks Thanks Steve for explaining how you see yourself on this topic. May we all follow this wise counsel. Ephesians 4:15-16 (Living Bible) 15-16 Instead, we will lovingly follow the truth at all times—speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly—and so become more and more in every way like Christ who is the Head of his body, the Church. Under his direction, the whole body is fitted together perfectly, and each part in its own special way helps the other parts, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

@1hopefulman Yes, if we follow the truth, at all times, we cannot go wrong, as long, as we keep our whole body full of love too, so that we do not "use" the truth, for our own purposes, but it more "uses" us, for God's or for love's purposes. That's a great verse of Saint Pauls, thanks for pointing it out to us here.

I respect and adore the life-giving energy that is what love for our creator is, as per my opinion. The all-pervasive connector glues us to the source and with each other. when we all resonate with that, then we are well on our way. Yes, spirituality matters as material hoardings are temporary, a burden, and gives a false sense of security - siva

I would say I am spiritual in my attitude to life but am not religious in the sense to believe only in one path. I am more agnostic as our beliefs are sort of exclusive leading to strife and intolerance. A few have hijacked the true meaning of religions to hold their sway over others. I believe in a deeper meaning to life over and above the material world that we physically live in - siva

Yes, I also believe that we all have a spiritual nature. Some of us unite with other believers who understand things the same way (religion) for worship, mutual encouragement and fellowship. The Bible shows that the early Christians first called their religion, The Way. Thanks for sharing your beliefs on this topic!

@1hopefulman I am religious if I follow what my religion dictates which is human in nature while I am spiritual If I feel that I am already in communion with the Supreme being which as of now I am not because I am still attached to material things.

One can write a dissertation on the proposed topic. Religious is one who is a member of religious community, e.g. a Jesuit, Dominican or Benedictine are all religious, but they are not necessarily spiritual persons. Spiritual persons may not belong to a religious community. It encompasses all people who practises his relationship with the Supreme Being.

That is true, much can be written on this topic. I have noticed that you have specified "religious" to the Catholic church. Would a Muslim who goes to the mosque, a Hindu that goes to the temple or a Jew that goes to the synagogue also be viewed as "religious"?

@1hopefulman I showed a Catholic perspective of what the word religious means, specifically from canon law. I am of the opinion that spiritual is the wider parameter than religious. The phenomenon religious order is uniquely found in Christian religion. So it would be a misnomer to call a Buddhist religious, in a strict sense. The Buddhist monks are called aptly spiritual persons.
