You know it's Easter when

There's hardly anyone around, 'cause they left last Friday. There's lot of things for half prize in the grocery stores, 'cause they close from Thursday to Monday. Open a bit on Saturday = even more things for half prize. They try to get rid of everything with "best before dates" during Easter. I buy stuff and put it in my freezer. Facebook is filled with pictures of yellow things and people skiing. How's Easter where you live? Do you join in the religious celebrations or just take holiday? Do you eat anything special?

Ham's nice. Any kind of special preparation? Lamb's the meat of choice for Easter here. I'm not a good cook so I might eat out.

Shops will be closed here mostly the small ones and the big places maybe Saturday perhaps they will open but they have staff that are not usually workig there all the time. No half price here in fact they usually double the price on everything if they can apart from that the celebrations are nice and much better if they come from the Coastal area.

@Torunn That is what they do here also certain brands shoot up in price. All the sell by dates are given a miss as well so it serves you well to check the date say on bread for example. No discount on things that are nearly out of date no chance. The way things go but us girls are one bit smarter and donĀ“t buy those with the date gone over.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Some shops here have the policy that if you find something that has best before date on the day you find it, you get it for free. There are people living off this and using nearly no money on food. Over Easter all the candy and other Easter stuff are sold for half price. It's stuff that last several months, so I eat more Easter candy after Easter than before

That's so unfair! Double prices for celebrations :-/ There's usually a price war on things that people buy for Easter, certain kinds of chocolate, oranges, lamb chops etc.

The stores are open on Friday and Saturday, no special offers here. Special food, eggs with asparagus, oven roasted lamb, Easter desserts. There are Processions tomorrow, I usually do not join.

I know eggs are a Easter thing, but asaparagus? Is that because it's asparagus-season? Or is it a bit too early? I always used to get them at the market when I studied in Vienna, but I don't remember when it started.

@LadyDuck I hardly ever eat asparagus here, 'cause it difficult to find it fresh. And even when it's fresh, it's not really fresh as I got used to in Vienna.

@Torunn I suppose it's because it is asparagus season and asparagus and eggs go well together. They are on the shelves from about one week.

Before, when my child was still small, I used to color boiled eggs for our Easter celebration. This time, no more but I have to bake a cake for my sons birthday on Easter Sunday.

We used to do that when I was a child. I think my mother hated it, because here we often make small holes to blow the egg out of the shell and then paint it. It's a bit of pain to get all of the egg out.

@thelme55 Last time I painted eggs was 20 years ago in Vienna, when my Scottish friends insisted we'd paint eggs and roll them down hills. Not empty eggs of course, must have been boiled eggs

@Torunn I know. I did it like that with my son and hubby. Then painted the empty egg.

That's so confusing :-) Isn't it at the same time some times? But usually not. Must check out who did what there, is it the Justinian and the Gregorian calendar not agreeing?

@LowRiderX That makes is slightly clearer :-) The papers here wrote that Easter this year should have been earlier according to some way of counting too. They really didn't make that week easy to place!

On Sunday my husband and I are going to have dinner with 3 friends. One of them lives in another part of the country he is going to stay here from Friday to Monday. We are not going to eat anything special, just the kind food we usually eat. Here some of the stores have found a different way to get rid of some of their things. When we buy something we get a scratchcard, and the card tell us what kind of discount we will get (25%, 50% etc)

@Torunn I also think it is a smart move. They did the same thing last year, and I guess that people liked it since they are doing it again. I thought that all of the scratch cards had a discount message inside, but that is not the case. I got one that said "Sorry, no discount".

That's a smart move buy the stores, 'cause it puts an element of competition/surprise in it. Lot of people like that.

@Porcospino That's a bummer! I'm going shopping on Saturday and on Tuesday. I've made sure that my freezers aren't too full. Today I got some cod and some chicken. Hoping for half priced Easter candy on Tuesday next week

No Easter lilies yet I think. I've seen daffodils and some small blue flowers, but too early for Easter lilies.

It is quiet here, at least during the day : the schools around my home are closed for holidays, and many neighbors are on holidays. The shops are closed on Easter Monday, which is a public holiday. I go to the mass and eat lamb on Easter Sunday.

@Torunn Though seafoods are rare this time because most fisherfolks do not sail out.
