Time to relive a childhood memory and celebrate those tasty animal cracker cookies again. Yes, National Animal Crackers Day is observed tomorrow April 18th.
Even though animal crackers are made with layered dough similar to cracker production, they are sweet like cookies. And unlike crackers, they are great for dunking in milk!
Here are some neat Animal Cracker Fun facts:
-In the late 1800s animal shaped cookies were imported to the U.S. from England.
-In 1902 animal crackers officially became known as “Barnum’s Animals,” using that familiar circus theme on the boxes sold in stores.
-Animal Crackers were originally sold for 5 cents.
-Nabisco is the company responsible for the Barnum and Bailey box design with the string attached, and no licensing fee is paid to the circus because of the clever way the company labels their product (Barnum's Animals).
-The string on the box was a gimmick designed for Christmas so the box could be hung on the tree as presents.
Yep, some really cool facts...
Now for your input! Did you enjoy animal crackers growing up? I did and I still buy them today. And do you have a favorite animal cookie? Mine was the elephant. Any other comments are welcome!
