Teaching Instruments Over Skype.

I teach guitar and other instruments at home in my Guitar Room and online over Skype. There are benefits and drawbacks to both. Would you consider learning an instrument online? Do you think there are better platforms than Skype? What would you recommend?

How much do you make? I've considered teaching music when I retire from all (or some of) the other stuff I do.

I charge $15 (USD) for half hour lessons. What I make depends on the number of students I have at any given time. If you can handle 8 hours a day of students you can make enough to live on but fir most if is it's just supplemental income.

@ParaTed2k I assume that's what it would be for me too. But if I I worked at Guitar Center or another guitar (or piano) store, I could probably make some decent money.

Yes, many people do, and that's awesome. But it does have some limitations.

I think it depends on the person. Some might prefer a session where the instructor can correct posture, finger placement etc. Skype I guess is as good as any, and I don't know of any others anyhow.

Yes, it very much depends on the person. I can see things like posture, finger placement and the like over Skype, so that isn't a problem.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, that would be one of the short comings of Skype. I do sometimes spend time describing something that would be easier just shown if we were side by side. Yes, there are some people who are just not comfortable with the Skype type arrangement. That is perfectly fine, and up to them. I have also found there are people who prefer Skype to being in the same room. I'm glad both options are available.

@ParaTed2k I was referring to those who might need a hand on their shoulder to help straighten them, help with finger placement hands on... I suppose those type wouldn't be seeking out skype sessions anyway.

It can take time. One of my Skype students is a girl I met at a Joan Jett & The Blackhearts concert, so you never know where opportunity might come up.
