THE EMPTY TOMB – A DAY OF REJOICING
Matthew 28:2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
Mark 16:1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun.
3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulcher?
4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.
Luke 24:3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spoke unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
8 And they remembered his words,
9 And returned from the sepulcher, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
John 20:3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulcher.
4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulcher.
5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.
6 Then came Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulcher, and saw the linen clothes lie,
7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
8 Then went in also the other disciple, which came first to the sepulcher, and he saw, and believed.
9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.
For more than 2000 years the account has gone forth that Jesus, whom they crucified on Passover, had risen from the dead. His tomb was empty, and He was seen alive, talking with the disciples and seen by over five hundred people at one time.
1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:
6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. (KJV)
For Christians this is the greatest day in history, the day our Savior, Jesus Christ, God’s Son, rose from the dead. He didn’t rise in secret, but angels proclaimed His resurrection.
Just as angels proclaimed Jesus’ birth, angels proclaimed His resurrection. God wanted people to know it was He who raised His Son from death to life, and it is God who through the Holy Spirit rolls the stone from your heart and tears away your doubt with the good news: “Why seek ye the living among the dead, He is Risen, just as He said. Come see the place where He lay.”
For over 2000 years people have gone to see the place where Jesus lay, and then went away rejoicing for the evidence of the empty tomb and the testimony of those who were first on the scene.
Are you rejoicing in the empty tomb today? Do you rejoice in your salvation, knowing without doubt, Jesus rose from the dead to give you life eternal?
John 20:30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. (KJV)
Eternal life is yours. The evidence has been presented. He IS risen.
Let’s pray: Father, thank you for the empty tomb. Thank you for raising Jesus from death to life. Thank you for my salvation given to me through Jesus shed blood on the cross and His resurrection on the third day. Let my life be a testimony of Your salvation. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
