Why Isn't My Hair Grey?

I am 62 years old. Since I hit about 40 I have been watching my friends's hair all go grey. Even my daughter, who will be 40 this summer, colors her hair to cover the grey. My younger sister, who is five years younger than I am has considerably more grey hair.
I know that hair turning grey has to do with the body running out of melanin. I just wonder why I am running out of it so much more slowly than almost everyone I know.
It's not that I mind the delay, but I don't think I will mind my grey hair when it finally comes. After all, I will be in good company. I am including a photo that I tried to take of myself. It's not very good, but you get the idea.
Do you have grey hair, when did it start to turn grey?

@norcal I am going to be 62 this year. Age happens as does grey hair. LOL

@ElusiveButterfly It certainly does. Other aspects of aging have caught up with me faster than the grey hair.

Were your parents like this too? My mother's side most were not getting gray until their 40s . . . my father's side started grey in their 20s (my cousin was all gray since before 30!). For me I had a grey hair or two since my early 20s but things weren't truly noticeable til I hit my 40s. At 50 now, I have "streaks" of greys - but I like the minor salt and pepper look as I also have black hair.

@norcal Sometimes I feel like I could be Cruella de Vil - but mine isn't as dramatic as that. More like Pepe le Pew . In any case you are fortunate to have your hair color without the greys . . . looks like you have great skin too. I would never have guessed you were 62 - not even close!

@JohnRoberts Ah yes, that's the other thing. Hopefully I won't have to worry about that.

Many say if one doesn't gray a lot, then they might lose their teeth in old age. I'm not sure if that's just a myth..

My daughter started greying in her twenties, I guess. It looks like silver threads all through her long dark hair. I think she gave me my first grey hairs by breaking her arm near the elbow on the playground in third grade. When we did not have insurance. My hair is grey in chunks. I use henna on my hair if I color it at all. It gives it a nice reddish cast and no root grow out.

Oh i think you should be happy that you don’t have one. Many dread to have it because it’s aesthetically not good to look at and it just means you’re getting old already. . Plus scalp becomes itchy and dry when white hair starts to grow. The natural oil in scalp tends to stop and growing white hair will make your hair itchy as it grows

I am in my 40s and I have started to get grey hair. Most of my hair still has the original color, but there are some grey strands. I dye my hair sometimes, not because I want to hide the grey hair, just because I like it better that way. I also dyed it before my hair started to get grey.

My husband's mom had been dying her hair since he was a kid. He once asked her what her natural hair color was, and she said, "I don't know, and I'm not about to find out!
Seriously, It's your hair. There is no right or wrong thing to do with it.

I have found a few strands that seem grey, but not very many. I am only in my 30s.
I say ask not want not. I hope my hair doesn't go gray for years. I don't know that I'll ever dye it to hide the grey.

Of course, if I were your age, I would probably not be wanting to go grey quite so soon.
I can see those few white hairs around the hairline under certain light. Once I saw them I thought, here we go, it's going to start happening now, but no, that's been a couple of years ago.
I've never been one to color my hair, I've done a few highlights, but that was about the extent of it. I will never try to hide my grey hair.

@norcal You know, I am not quite sure what all is involved in going gray. I've heard that the quickness of you going gray depends on genetics and heredity.

I'm not 40 yet. I think my mother's hair has gone grey, but she colors it. She had talked about getting a silver color hair dye.

You're lucky to have slower growth of grey hair. I am 57 and still have black hair. There's about 3 strands of gray here which are there since I was in my 30s

I don't know. I was slow to gray. My temples are mostly where I am gray and a few strands in other places about the top of my head.

I guess your hair wants to remain "young at heart." I'm sure genetics have a lot to do with it. My grandfather who passed away in his 70's never had a gray hair. The reason why has to do with the pigment in one's hair cells and the melanin it contains. If your around long enough everyone will eventually lose melanin over time and it will turn gray, white or silver.
