Missed it by two days!

I recently bought a turkey for $7. So cheap! My plans were to cook it and can the meat and as much broth as I could get from it. Well, I got a tad distracted and two days passed by. Tonight I went to toss the turkey in my crock pot (though after eyeballing the size of the turkey and size of the crock pot, I started to second guess that method of cooking) and found the turkey was slimy and smelled of rotten eggs. Nuts! It had gone bad! I hate it when food gets wasted like that. I really need to keep a better eye on expiration dates! What foods have you accidentally forgotten about and had to sacrifice to the garbage can?

Best bargain indeed, i hate wasting food. There were times, i threw a bottle of oyster sauce, a pack of oatmeal and other condiments because of expiration dates,

I didn't know oatmeal could expire.

I grew up listening my mother saying "never throw food, plenty of people die for starving every day". I pay attention to the expiration day, I only threw some leftover sauces, but not a big quantity.

@Genipher The few times I have little meat or fish leftovers, I give to the cats of my neighbors, at least it's not wasted.

@LadyDuck Well, I did give each of our dogs a raw turkey leg but I was a little nervous that the bad turkey could make them sick. I don't know...can dogs get e-coli or salmonella from bad meat? Or do their digestive systems handle it better than ours? Because I've seen them eat some truly gross things. At any rate, the rest of the carcass got tossed.

Our kids always produce some waste but this loss of turkey was pretty shameful.

After having a bad experience as a child and drank expired milk by accident i am also constantly checking the dates on things. The last time was some meat and i know i felt it taste weird and i got real sick. Good think you smelled it rotten and didn't eat it.

Ew. I can't imagine drinking bad milk. Yeah, I'm particularly careful about expired meats. I'm kicking myself for leaving the turkey in the fridge so long. I should have tossed it into the freezer until I had time to cook it. Grrrrr!
