Got Milk?

Yesterday we added two new kids to the family. Goat kids, that is! Alice (white) and Lucy (black) are 2-month old Nigerian Dwarf doelings. They have a nice, warm shed for the nights and during the day they get to roam our massive backyard and eat the blackberries that have been trying to take over. I was surprised to discover they like to eat our tall grass, as well, since all my research led me to believe they weren't "lawnmowers" like sheep. When they're about a year old we'll have them bred. Since we're allowed up to 3 goats, I'm thinking we'll be able to keep a future female baby. The rest we'll sell. And since the Nigerian Dwarf breed commonly has 2-4 kids, we'll be rolling in babies to sell! And then there's milking. I'm super excited to learn how to milk and have our own dairy source. We'll be able to make our own cheese and ice cream and possible goat milk soap! Do y'all have goats? If so, what kind?

Weeeell...I ended up pregnant again (#8 for us- due April 2020) and I was so sick and tired I couldn't handle the goats. They're high maintenance compared to other animals. So I found them new homes. Having them was a good learning experience though. And they were a lot of fun to watch.

The horns are beautiful, but a bit scary! Our two doelings have been disbudded, so their horns won't grow. That'll make them safer for my little children to be around.

@Genipher that is correct, it's better to be careful than to have accident right?

They are cuties. I've never owned goats, but I've known a few. My aunt had some for a while. And a family friend had one they let live in the house for the longest time. I don't know what kind it was. I just remember he had a heart shaped brown patch. We said he has a 'Heart of Goat" instead of a Heart of Gold.

We are not allowed to keep goats, it is considered "residential area". I am planning to get a sheep for some days to "mow the lawn" and give it back to the farmer after it mowed.
