4 wheel drive

i have a 1987 ford ranger with locking front hubs.it doesn't always work right.when driving in 4 high,it will start to clunk and then everything goes into neutral and it begins to make a grinding sound.i have to stop the truck,put the tranny in neutral,put the truck back into 2 wheel drive and start over.any suggestions?
