I Found my Long Lost Second Cousin

Well actually, she found me. I got a friend request on Facebook from someone whose maiden name was the same as mine. I accepted her request, and right away asked her how we were related. It turns out, her dad was my dad's uncle, brother to my dad's dad. I did remember visiting them when I was a little kid. My dad died when I was six, and my mom moved us from Louisiana to California, so we lost contact with my dad's extended family. My newfound cousin said she always wondered what happened to us. She is only two years older than I am. We chatted for quite a while. It was nice. Have you ever found a long lost friend or relative online?

Yay and congratulations! I am glad to hear it. I think I told you, my father's half sister found me on facebook. She was adopted out when she was very young, and she's older than my father, who is the oldest.

@norcal Yes, isn't it? Of course this lady helped me find some information out about her mother's side of things. Which was awesome. She also told me who her father was and why she was put up for adoption. I had no idea about her until she told me.

It's funny how meaningful it can feel when we connect with our blood relatives, even when we didn't know them.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That must have been very emotional for her as well, after not having any blood family.

That is truly awesome and very heartwarming. I've found childhood friends on Facebook and they've found me. It's wonderful. I hope you stay in touch with your cousin!

I hope so too. It's odd how sometimes you connect with people online and then there isn't much interaction after the first contact, but we shall see. Now that we are on the same side of the country, maybe I will make it down to Louisiana sometime.

Reunited - that's neat! Yes, I have found many ol' friends, family and very distant relatives on FB! I have this whole other sector of family that live in Canada on my dad's side . . . it's funny because they kinda look like us, but our lifestyles are very different from all the family down here.

@norcal It's kinda like a whole different species of family . So different, right? For me, the family here was more traditionally Japanese but living in America . . . whereas the Canadian side were more "westernized", more religious, with a tight sense of community.

She said she was going through some old things and found all of our (my siblings) names and birth dates listed in her mother's Bible. That moved her to reach out to me.
