A new pet!

Yesterday while pottering in the greenhouse, I picked up a plant pot and as usual a few woodlice scuttled away from underneath. Nothing unusual there - except this time one of them was a really big one, definitely the biggest I’ve ever seen! Little One likes all sorts of creepy-crawlies, so I thought I just had to keep it to show her. I caught it and put it in a tub with a few bits of plant material, to show her when she got back from school. Sure enough, she was enchanted – she wants to keep it as a pet! So Lucy Louse is currently residing in an ice-cream tub in the kitchen, furnished with a few bits of dead wood and provisioned with some salad offcuts. So far we have ascertained that she likes cucumber. Of course Lucy could be a he, we haven’t checked and I’ve only just found out how to tell the difference, will have a look tomorrow! We have already been watching her with a magnifying glass, which is strangely fascinating – although I’ve seen thousands of woodlice in my life I’ve never before seen one actually eating! What’s the strangest ‘pet’ you’ve had in the family? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2019.

I always called those bugs "pillbugs" because they roll up into a ball.

I've come across that name in some places. Only some species can roll up. There are quite a few different types.

My goodness, is it pet or pest? I can't even think about those bugs as pets.

@Fleura haha I don't know, on seeing the picture, I felt odd and nodded my shoulder. We used to see them in the cow-dung pits in our village.

They're definitely not pests, but I have never had a 'pet' one before. Like many things, the more you know about them the more interesting they are!

I got my son a hermit crab once. We had him quite awhile..but either he passed away, or got out of the bowl and we couldn't find him. I will ask my son if he remembers.

I love hermit crabs! Never had one as a pet though, I would think they would be quite difficult to keep (needing specific conditions I mean).

@Fleura not too hard. Not sure if they still do but they used to sell them down at the shore.

How cool and fascinating! It's something Little One will learn lots of things from observing. I once captured a baby mouse when I was a little girl. I put it in a wooden box on a doll bed, covered it, left thimbles of water and lettuce for it, and when I went to say good morning to it, found out that it was gone. I cried for days. I hope your daughter has better luck than I did, lol

Wow, how did you catch that? Probably just as well that it wasn't there, but how sad for you : (

@NJChicaa They have pretty markings don't they? My neighbour used to have some, he bred several kinds of snakes and lizards and frogs.

@Fleura I see you do have a new pet,. What do they eat? I had usual pets. We had squirrels outside and instead of getting a dog I got a hamster once and had a dog and cats here. I guess you could say we had a ladybug on our porch for a little bit but then it was cold and it was gone.

They eat mainly vegetable matter of all sorts, so LucyLouse gets veg peelings and that sort of thing.

@Hannihar Between 2 and 4 years, apparently, but of course we don't know how old this one is already.

I have seen woodlices ,some of them would roll up into a ball if you disturb them. Here we use them to cure some illnesses.

Apparently there were various so-called 'cures' involving woodlice in the old days - such as hanging them in a bag around a child's neck to relieve teething pains. There are many different varieties, some of them roll up and some don't.
