Where do mosquitos go in the winter?

I rarely see a mosquitos when it is cold. But I see millions in the winter. Where are they now that it's getting cold?

Mosquitoes vary in how they over-winter. In the north mosquitoes usually
over-winter as eggs, which hatch when the ice thaws. Most other
mosquitoes may over-winter as eggs or larvae, but some Anopheles (malaria)
mosquitoes may over-winter as adult females. These are often found
clustered in sheltered areas, such as under boardwalks in cypress swamps
in Florida.
