Okay so I was reading a survey,it states that you can either be a Maths person or an English person... You can't be both.... So I mean is it true....??? I have always been fond of both.... May be maths represents mostly logic and English represents speech or communication... What say...?

I despair about the amount of complete rubbish one reads on the Web! Very often (as, I think, in this case) it is true and sensible information which has been shortened and twisted around so that it's actually false. Most people, it seems (according to a recent study of four-year olds which was reported in the Telegraph) have a natural predisposition towards either Maths or English and it is rather rare to find someone who excels equally in both. You will, however, find plenty of people who are competent writers and who are also good at Maths. Of course, Maths can involve many different skills and disciplines. Someone who can do mental arithmetic easily in their head or who can run their fingers down a column of figures, adding up as they go, isn't necessarily a good mathematician, even though they might make a halfway decent accountant. A lot of people would say that someone is 'good at Maths' simply because they aren't afraid of numbers!

Haven't read the study, but I hope it's the newspaper version that states "English" instead of languages? I suppose I should read it. Must search for reference at some point. I teach math and German and don't think I'm predisposed for either side, but maybe I'm just weird.

@Torunn I an not sure that being good at languages is necessarily the same as being good at English. Both, certainly, involve an aptitude for words and their meanings but I think that being a linguist involves dealing with the data involved in a slightly different way.

@owlwings Well, it could be quite a lot of things. It could be being good at languages. It could be being good at English, both for native speakers and the rest of us. That would be quite weird though. It could be being good at using your native language, and that everyone in the test had English as their first language. It could also be being good at English in a wider perspective, including litature etc. The references I find that don't say English say "the ability to read, write and communicate" or something similar. They've tested 4 year old children it says.

@hereandthere Music is an art form, I think it's more out of comfort that people choose it

Do you have reference for that? Doesn't make sense. And not just because I'm teaching math and languages (although not English, but I suppose the point here is languages, not which language) but because I know quite a few people who are fairly good at both

i don't have any numbers or reference to it, it's something that people claim, I got to hear this number of times from the people around me. I personally don't consider it to be very true

I simply notice that if one is good in english, he is not good in math and vice versa.

I am way better at learning new languages, reading and expressing myself in public. On the other hand I don't do well with maths, numbers, and all that stuff.

I think i'll go to English because I love learning language. As for math, as long as I can still count a simple calculation, then I think I will be fine, but of course still need to practice my speed, it's impressive to calculate in speed in math.
