My first bamboo toothbrush

I have mentioned on one of my posts that I’m trying to lessen the use of plastic or any single use plastic as much as I can. Using bamboo toothbrush will help me avoid the plastic ones. Once this has worn out then I can just pound the handle to very small pieces and put it on soil and I believe it will decompose on its own. Note that only the handle is bamboo while the bristles are still plastic but very minimal. This I will put on regular plastic recycling.

That is a nice environment friendly initiative. Actually in good olden days people in India used Neem twigs for brushing. We chewed the soft side and made our bristles. With the medicinal and cleansing properties of neem, it did not require a toothpaste. And it was use and throw to decompose after you are done.. Good old days..

This reminds me my Childhood! When we used to go to our native place we used to use the fresh small sticks from neem tree to brush our teeth. we use to chew the tip and then the same was used to brush the teeth. That used to be one of the traditional way of brushing the teeth then and i am sure now also this practice must be existing in rural India.

I still do it when I visit my place in Varanasi or my husband's house. We have neem trees there. I remember using salt with these neem twigs to clean our teeth. Some used charcoal too. Now these toothpaste companies use charcoal in them and shout out loud... Kya apke toothpaste me namak hai? And few decades back they criticized our traditional way calling it uncivilized..

I tried one of those bamboo brushes but it irritated the inside on my mouth and caused a blister and I had to stop using it.

I am on the same mission--and recently bought both bamboo and corn starch toothbrushes. Our local dollar store had a bunch of them--so I bought some and like both of them--I was thinking about using them as markers for our spring and summer veggie plantings--

cool! I haven’t seen the corn starch one yet. Using them as plant marker is also one of the ways they can be reused. If you also love arts and crafts, it can be used there too. I’m happy that many others like you also support the same mission.

Yes it is eco friendly and it’s also the name of the store ecoph. I was really excited while buying it that I also bought one for my boyfriend. I’m trying to encourage him to support me There is that different feeling specially on the first time use and also because I’ve been using plastic toothbrush for so long but you’ll get used to it. I’m just happy that when this wears out, I can just put it on soil and not add to trash.

That sounds like a great idea. I use an electric toothbrush..but I guess I could get a bamboo one for travel maybe. I didn't know those existed to be honest.

@weevee18 Congrats for reducing your carbon footprint. I know they have bamboo pillows as well. They are supposed to be very good and comfortable.

I think some sellers offer a bamboo case for travel too. I’ve discovered this when I started getting interested in organic shampoo bars actually. My shampoo bars are stored in a tin can. When I browsed some catalogues, I saw that they were also selling bamboo toothbrush. It also took me a few months before I finally bought a bamboo toothbrush.
