So Which One Is More Contaminated, The Lemon Or The Menu?

There really is no right or wrong answer here. However, I will try to make a point on what may otherwise appear to be a riddle with no real conclusion.
My husband had a family member in town for a visit last week. We will call this relative 'Know It All Nolan'.
Nolan is very opinionated and thinks he knows basically everything ( or at least most things ).
Are you beginning to understand the personality of this insecure man? Anyway, my husband and I met up with Nolan and his mother at a local restaurant.
When Nolan's mother asked her son to pass the dish of lemon wedges for her water, he attempted to educate her on the fact that the lemons were not washed and therefore were contaminated.
In the meantime, Nolan is still holding on to his menu that had been handled by who knows how many people before him with who knows what on their hands. ( Yuck ).
Did Nolan have brains enough to get his butt up off the chair, go to the men's room and wash his hands after handling the menu? That's what I always do. No, he did not!
To make matters even more gross, Nolan grabbed the bread from the plate with his bare, gross hands and proceeded to feed his face like he hadn't eaten in a week.
Is there anybody out there who can help me make any sense of 'Know It All Nolan'? I'm open to any suggestions.

I've seen studies on both of these - bottom line is that multiple studies found fecal matter on the menu AND on the lemons. But at the same time, studies find fecal matter on your toothbrush if you keep it in the bathroom. So...its all bad. lol

Yes, that's my point. Contaminants are all around. Individually, if we don't take the time to properly wash our own hands and pay attention to what we, ourselves are doing, we could become very ill.
Sometimes people spend too much time worrying about what others are doing and they don't pay attention to themselves. I am just as concerned about the menu as I am the lemon.

@betlynfrnds Yes! If everyone washed their hands it would be so much better!

That is so very true. The only real cure for that is dining alone. .
By the way, rebelann, that is a beautiful cat on your avatar.

I know of someone who behaves in this manner also. Besides being gross it is annoying.
Sorry no clue on how to deal with him except dont see him.

I really like the idea of not seeing him and I will do my best to take that advice the best I can. This is a relative of my husband's by marriage. I usually try to send the two of them on their own while I go in another direction.
It doesn't surprise me that you know somebody with a similar personality. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of those types.

@Tampa_girl7 Oh dear. Sorry about that. I suppose that personality type is a little too common for my own good.

I'm a hand washer myself. As far as the lemon verses the menu, I totally agree that the lemon is better to take a chance with.

If we can see all the contaminants or pollutants surrounding us we would be petrified and unable to go above our daily activities. Our immune system needs to be expose to some amount of impurities in order to strengthen it. I'm reminded of a John Travolta movie, " the boy in the plastic bubble" who live inside a germ free environment because of immune deficiencies.
I think big corporations in the health business have manage to frighten us into a cleanliness paranoia. I've seen children bathing and swimming in polluted streams or picking through garbage dumpsites to earn a living who seem to be normal healthy.
As for "know it all" Nolan, best to avoid contact least one gets infected.

That is so true; all of what you say is true. I vaguely remember The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. I know that trying to be balanced is a key to most things in life.
As far as nit wit Nolan, avoiding contact is excellent advice that I will definitely take into consideration. I will do the very best I can.
Thank you for your great response.

I don't pay attention to people like that, even when I'm sitting across the table from them in a restaurant. Though thankfully, that hasn't happened in a while, and never to such an extreme. There's nothing you can do for a person like that.

I'm thinking that next time, it there is a next time, I will just have to bring my ear buds for my phone and listen to something, anything worth while.
You're right, there is nothing to do for people who are already so set in their ways.

Hard to debate with those who have all the answers...It is true about handling objects which have germs and not washing your hands. I'll never look at a menu the same way again, ugh..

The kind of Nolan is everywhere. They only see the dirt of others while they have big dirt themselves.

I have already met that kind of person. I just listen to him and never argue. I let him fall for himself.
