Hi Friends!
Recently I was treated by a friend to tickets to "Stars on Ice" when it was in Minneapolis at the beginning of the month. We had box seats - and the first thing I noticed was that we were alone in the box. I felt bad there weren't more people attending such an event. The shows I had seen on TV in the 90s - the audience was jam packed in. This event didn't have a lot of people attending by contrast.
In my teen years I was a huge figure skating fan. I fondly remember the names from when I was actively watching the sport. Most of those, shockingly have retired since. Michelle Kwan, Tara Lipinski, and of course some of my favorites who were already later on in their careers when I was watching like Evgeni Plushenko, Elvis Stojko, Katerina Witt all are long since retired.
Even realizing this, I was shocked that I didn't recognize *any* of the names.
There were some who were introduced as Olympians. There were group numbers and solos alike , and particularly nice I found they let the local skating club do a routine.
Surprisingly, I found that I actually missed the commentary. The jumps and spins were exciting to see in person vs. on TV as I was used to. But without the commentary I was lost. Was this a difficult jump? A simple jump? Was there anything special about this or that particular sequence?
Also of surprise - a lot of the costumes were rather lackluster. One lady skated in oversized jeans and a flannel shirt. A group number featured something looking like plain grey cover alls. Still other solos and groups were skating simply in jeans and t shirts. (note: this wasnt the local skating club, either) For a production as large as "Stars on Ice" - I was surprised at amount of rather lackluster outfits.
I did find that I liked the style of and choreography of Jason Brown and the Shibuntus.
I did like the sound the skates made, audible even over the music up in our box seats.
In all I'm thankful my friend took me - and it was fun to see a performance live of a sport I had so often seen on TV instead.

I think ice skating his become less popular since American woman stopped winning Gold medals in the Olympics. Now it seems to be dominated by Asian or European countries. I remember the ice shows on TV pretty much every Saturday afternoon during the winter. Scott Hamilton doing his backflip and Nancy Kerrigan's graceful skating. The controversy with Tonya definitely helped her popularity. And then all those you mentioned were very popular. Skating now just does not have the same impact.

Ah. That makes sense too. And like you mention, while it was a disaster for Nancy and Tonya - the scandal did seem to popularize the sport in general.
Did you see "I, Tonya"?

@FayeHazel I have not, although I did see a Reelz TV documentary which did a good job of recreating that melodrama.

Lucky you! Gone is the era of skating superstars . . . there used to be household names but a lot of people don't know many of the current athletes - probably because they don't televise these things on the networks anymore. Did you see Nathan Chen - the Quad King? Jason Brown is such a delight to watch. The Shibutani's are a great sibling dance duo. I just looked up the cast list - yah, most of them are probably not household names.

Oh that makes sense. At least there is a reason for it.
Nathan Chen was there is I remember right. Maybe he was the one I thought did more jumps than some of the rest.
Loved Jason Brown's style. Him/his choreographer are brilliant. They showcase his strengths quite well.
Shibutani's amazed me with how together they were
But alas, no household names anymore

@FayeHazel Nathan Chen is athletic, but Jason Brown is much more artistic and I prefer his style too. I wouldn't mind seeing an Old Stars on Ice show .

@much2say Is Chen really tall? I remember thinking one of them was quite tall :-)
I really loved the arms and level changes Brown did.

I'm surprised, too. The outfits sound more like Hee Haw than Stars On Ice. Every time I've seen ice skating (Only on TV) the costumes were always bright and sparkly on the girls and not so sparkly on the guys but colorful and they all seemed more like evening wear than farm wear.

@FayeHazel I hope the producers are paying attention to that. When lighting effects get more attention than the performers, the show is in trouble. And not many people being there is another big clue.

So true - a costume can help so much with portraying whatever you want it to for your routine, the way fabrics lay or move can accent what moves you are doing and sparkle adds so much. I'm really surprised they didn't utilize more bling on costumes since they did have a very impressive lighting rig, would have been very effective.
As a side note - interestingly enough - the audience seemed to most like the times when the lighting would change and make designs on the ice. That would usually get more cheers than the jumps or spins the skater was doing.
Audience psychology. lol.

@xander6464 Yeah that is sort of scary lol/ Yay! Lights! - it takes so little to amuse people at times.

He's good, but I don't understand Spanish but could see those jumps were not easy ones. I've been to Disney on Ice many years ago and took my granddaughter with me. I know they were famous skaters and the program was wonderful.
I'm sorry the costumes were lackluster but you enjoyed the program.

Lucky you. I wish I can attend one of those. It's true that the career of a professional figureskater usually is a short one.
