some people can't be trusted sadly - the ones who have let me down most have usually been family

Yes it's ok. Don't let anyone make you feel inferior about having trust issues. Trust is earned and once it's lost it's hard if not impossible to get back. But it would probably make you feel better to work on this issue. I'm not trying to tell you what to do just giving an opinion bc I've been in your shoes I know how it feels not to trust anyone especially when you've been wronged. I wish you luck and positive vibes.

Its difficult to have trust issues and if we do have it is better to work on this right away

I think this depends completely on the sensitivity of the secrets you have. If they're really sensitive, I could understand not wanting to tell even your closest friends about them. I have things I wouldn't tell my close friends but I would tell my family, for example. If you're having trouble trusting a single person with anything to the point it's making you paranoid or something, then I'd worry. But until then, keep doing you!

Well, i think you get to watch closesly if they ever do that to other friends, and how they talk about the other people who are close to them like you. then you'll know if they talk about you and how..
But to me, you don't need to tell them anything just for the sake of telling them, but if you have a problem and need their help, then maybe it's okey to tell them.
