Pain Relief May Be On The Way

This morning I went to the orthopedic doctor. I have very bad knees, one has no cartilage at all and the other one has very little. I have had this condition for more than 20 years. I got a series of x-rays and the doctor told me that one leg is a candidate for knee replacement. I explained that my mother lived to be 103 and I would need to have a second replacement if I did it now. He agrees that there are other things I can do. First, he gave me cortisone shots in both knees and he was pleased to find I had no fluid in either knee. He also gave me a prescription for a pain medication that is easier on the stomach than my Naproxen. He also is sending me for physical therapy which he said may help. While I do lots of exercises, none of them are specific to my arthritis situation. The shots should help me either later today or tomorrow if they are going to work, if they don't work then he will do the gel in three months. So, I am looking forward to feeling a little less pain.

It’s best to try other things first before you head to knee replacement. Prayers that this will help you.

@DianneN Still not good, the doctors can't figure out why he isn't getting better. No Doctor House at Hartford Hospital.

@BelleStarr You are kidding me! I can’t believe he’s still not doing well. I will pray extra for him to get well. We all need a Dr. House.

@BelleStarr It’s definitely worth avoiding surgery for as long as possible. Thank you so much for the prayers. I appreciate them. How is your son-in-law doing?

My mother always complained of pain in her knees. I used to feel so sorry for her as I could tell that at times it impeded her from getting up and doing things. Years later they told her that her knees felt the pain because her hips needed replacing. They have so much available to diagnose with today, and I hope that they provide you with the right exercises to hopefully put off the surgery until it is necessary. Keep your positive outlook, that has a lot to do with our diagnosis and our treatment plans.

@BelleStarr Ugh, there are days when I feel like I'm ready for the glue factory, and that is when I push myself harder. You do the same, I know it.

I hope it works. My mother has cortisone shots on a regular basis. She has never wanted a knee replacement..but she would be able to walk better if she had had one. So far, so good for me and my knees.

I know people who have had great result with knee replacements and others not so good. The thing is if I live as old as my mother I will need them replaced again.

@BelleStarr oh so was I and that's what makes it so hard now. I worked hard and did everything fast. I can't seem to get used to how far down I have come.

Thank you but this is so little to suffer compared to what you deal with every day. I have had this knee pain for so long it is just part of my life but I used to be able to walk great distances and was even more active.

@BelleStarr i'll warn ya, 'tis awful tastin', lol. jest get the unflavored 'n put'n a juice ya can tolerate. such'll not dissolve, so 'tis best to get a small glass, mix (best ya can) 'bout 1 tsp 'f the gelatin 'n chug't down. did wonders fer the hubs knees 'n all those we know that 'tis tried 't 've been most happy with the results. not instant, mind'ja, takes a few weeks. the collagen found 'n such does wonders fer yer joints - yer hair, skin 'n nails 'll be happy, too.

I sure hope the injection helps your pain. Mine hurt going down any stairs, but not bad enough for surgery.

That's great you're looking at less pain. I hope the shots work. As bad as my knees ache and I'm ready for knee replacement, though the doctor won't do it until I lose the weight, I will not get shots in my knees. The thought of it makes me cringe with horror as I remember the last couple of times a doctor came at my knees with a needle. Nope. I'll suffer the pain.

Actually, there was little pain with the cortisone shot, a little prick of the needle and then a small feeling of pressure as the cortisone was pushed in, it was so much easier than I expected. If I get relief, it will be so worth it!! There is novocaine in the shot to help with pain so I am still not feeling any.

Hope this works for you. I suffer with bad knees too but refuse to consider knee replacement right now. Let me know how the cortisone shots work as that might be my next step.

I will and surprisingly it wasn't really painful which I was dreading, it was a little prick and then the pressure as they pushed it in but they add novocaine to dull the pain it is not hurting yet.

Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) is good for knee pain caused by a minor injury or an arthritis flare. Give your knee some rest, apply ice to reduce swelling, wear a compressive bandage, and keep your knee elevated.

I have no cartilage, and haven't for 20 years, this therapy may work in new cases, I think I am way beyond that. It is not a minor injury it is deterioration. But thank you, it was nice of you to comment.
