Planted more corn at the preschool today, and harvested more snow peas.

I've been growing corn, sunflowers, green beans, and snow peas with the kids at the preschool where I substitute teach. It's been a thrill for the kids as the plants get "bigger bigger bigger," and a thrill for me as well. Today, we harvested about 10 snow peas, which we shared at snack time, and also transplanted another corn plant which had been growing on my balcony. I'm hoping we'll have a bunch of sunflowers, green beans, and tall corn by the end of the Summer (the snow peas will start to die off soon in the intense heat), but you never know. This is my first year working with kids at this particular preschool. Wish us luck! I didn't bring my camera today, so I'll attach a picture from the Berkeley preschool when the corn was doing well. It's closer to the Bay, and further from California's "official" corn country.

Where is the left sock of the kid? Your corn is doing great, good luck for the rest of your veggies.

Heh. When little kids are involved, socks, shoes, and sweaters can wind up in random places. Thanks for the best wishes. My balcony green beans are off to a really good start.

@LadyDuck We have strawberries at the preschool, but they're still at the "green stage." I'm not a strawberry expert. What kinds of dishes will you use the peppers for?

@crazyhorseladycx Some people like to listen and learn. Others do not. Most kids do. So somehow that tendency gets "erased" over time in many of us. Sad.

Actually, the kids take so much information in, they could probably teach their parents.

That's a wonderful thing you are doing with these young children. Gardening is a wonderful activity and it is a good way to bring them close to nature.

They'll probably be around for another month or so. But in my experience, they tend to like cool weather, and a balanced mix between rain and sunshine.

How I wish I could do the same. I'm not a "green thumb" so anything I try plant ends up dying.

Getting the kids a hands-on experience in gardening and food source is a good approach. It is important to nurture those qualities early on into shaping the future of humanity. I sound like a preacher, didn't I? Sorry. Your vision just invoked that in me.

Do the kids take a real interest in growing, as in going home and asking their parents if they can plant something?

The kids always enjoy "harvest time." But they enjoy the planting and the watering as well.

Its a good thing you`re doing Colin, my mom taught me, next my dad, to grow plants and food. So, look at me now, attempting to grow my own food year round and not doing to bad at it.

Even if the harvest is only "symbolic," it's a good thing. But I must say, our snow peas are doing quite well at the preschool!

@andriaperry It's funny. When I think of elementary school in Chicago, one of my happiest memories is when we had little gardens. I can't remember if it was fifth or sixth grade. I didn't get back into gardening until I worked with poor kids in Oakland and realized that growing stuff would be fun for them.
