Afraid of getting diabetes

Diabetes and high blood pressure run in our family, but i'm afraid of getting the former. I've seen relatives died of the diabetes. Actually they don't really died of the disease, but the complications of it: kidney problem, high blood pressure, heart problem, even increases the risk of poor eye vision. Right now, all of us in the family are controlling the intake of sugar, salt and rice, just to prolong our chance of getting the disease
