Have you ever forced yourself to eat something you didn't like?

I was randomly thinking about the time I forced myself to eat fruit cake. I really hate fruit cake. But I didn't eat it to torture myself. I forget how old I was. Rough guess, about 7 or 8. My Nan and Pop took me along to visit their friends. George and Lucy. They were an elderly married couple. Also R.I.P to them both as they are no longer here. Both beautiful people. Seriously, they were both so kind! Anyway, I remember George came up to me holding a plate that had slices of fruit cake on it. I was preparing myself to say "No thank you" to him but I struggled to do so because he said "Would you like some fruit cake? I made it myself." Just as he said "I made it myself" I noticed his smile. It was such a warm and genuine smile but also a smile that showed how pleased he was of himself for making the cake. Every time I think about this memory, I feel the exact same I did when it actually happened. I feel my heart glowing as well as not wanting to turn down the offer as he wanted to share what he baked. So I said "Yes please" and sat there eating the whole slice. I still didn't like it but I felt guilty if I didn't eat it all. I didn't want to appear like I wasn't enjoying it so it was a bit of a struggle but still managed to eat it all. And I could tell he was even more pleased with himself after I had finished. I could never bring myself to tell him that I didn't like it and I really really hate lying, but his smile seriously melted my heart that I didn't want to hurt him in any way. To be honest, maybe me saying "No thank you" wouldn't have hurt him at all but I didn't want to take the chance.

That was sweet of you to eat it, even though you don't like fruit cake, for him. Sometimes we need to do that for the people we care about! I don't remember being forced to eat anything. My uncle once paid me $5 to eat deviled eggs (with pickles in them). I loved deviled eggs without the pickles in them now though.

@MommyOfEli2013 Thank you for your kind words. I was thinking about it today actually and pulled the sad lip thinking of George's face lol Makes my heart melt! I think I tried a deviled egg when I was a kid but I don't remember if I liked it or not. Are there various ways to make them?

Yeah I ate fish ones and I hate fish but my husband stepmom made it for the whole family family dinner so I just politely ate it. My kids didn’t really touch there’s so I didn’t even try to eat there not blaming them on not wanting it either.

@VivaLaDani13 I eat shrimp and crawfish. Some times I’ll eat like canned tuna but over all I don’t like fish.

@ShyBear88 Oh no! I've been in that position too. I hate any seafood but felt bad rejecting the dinner.

@ShyBear88 That is fair enough. I have tried shrimp...actually to be honest I was literally forced it by an a$$hole I once dated and same thing with the tuna. To which I was sick. Any seafood just isn't my thing.

Funny, that you don't like fruit cake as I love that stuff but only homemade. My sister used to make a mean one with lots of rum in it.

@VivaLaDani13 My sister passed away a few years ago, so I can no longer eat her "famous" fruit cake.

@marlina Nice! Do you have your sister's recipe? Or do you have your own way you prefer to make it? (not actually sure if there are many ways to make it) I have tried to like fruit cake but.... Just can never like the taste.

What a nice gesture you made. I am sure you made him happy accepting the cake. I forced myself to eat a spinach salad once, I was sick, really sick almost immediately.

@VivaLaDani13 There was nothing but spinach in the salad. I cannot eat raw spinach, I have a problem even with cooked spinach, unless they only part of a dish, like spinach and ricotta ravioli.

@LadyDuck I'm sorry it made you sick. Was it the actual spinach that made you sick or was it another ingredient in the salad?

I had a friend who had so much pride in her cooking/entertaining skills - she invited me for dinner one time. She made some strange chicken pasta dish . . . it was clumpy and gloppy - I just remember it being quite difficult to bite into the hard chicken pieces. But knowing how ultra sensitive she is (and she was boasting how this was her grandmother's recipe), I HAD to eat it. And I ate super slow because I knew what would happen if I ate it too fast (I'd be asked if I wanted seconds, and if I didn't, I already knew she'd be quite offended). Come to think of it, she also made these rich candies (divinities - or something like that) and I could not eat beyond a bite of that - l literally swallowed one and told her I was watching my sugar intake .

@VivaLaDani13 Well, I know that if I offend her, I will suffer the consequences . The wrath of my friend is not too pretty - I've never been on that end and hope to never be .

I am really picky about food textures and how they feel in my mouth. I hate mushrooms! They are so rubbery. My Mom used to make a casserole that had mushrooms and I had to eat them. Once I got older, I just picked them out.

@VivaLaDani13 I understand why you forced yourself to eat it because he made it and you did not want to offend him. I tried something once and did not like it but at least tried it. I cannot remember what it was.

@VivaLaDani13 The dish was nothing weird but the cooking was too spicy. I couldn't eat it full. I had to leave some in my plate. And they were insisting to give some more.

Yes! Sometimes out of courtesy, because I don't want to upset others, I try to eat the food I don't like. However, for things I cannot eat and if I eat it, the consequences are worse than refusal, I will choose to refuse from the beginning.
