I have agoraphobia and have an unreasonable fear of crowds. However just scared of something is the palmetto bug. For those of you who don't know what it is, count yourself lucky. Picture a cockroach between 2 and 4 inches long, if not bigger and some of them fly too. They love to live in Palm Trees, hence their name. They live all over in Florida and no matter what you do they are there. Your house can be spotless, doesn't matter. They will come in looking for food, water, warmth whatever. I can't stand them at all. Oh by the way if you are afraid of spiders (I don't like them but I don't run usually) the one that eats the palmetto bug is called a wolf spider and it's all over Florida too. It's body is only about the size of a quarter but it's legs are a good six to nine inches long. They can jump higher then your head. You go to kill one and before you can they are gone, they have jumped clear to the other side of the room. Then people wonder why I don't like living in Florida.

The same thing we are all scared of the unknown. Not knowing whats next is a fear of most as its understandable to be scared of not knowing(examples) whats next, whos there, where you are,how to swim, when u will die etc...

I don't think I have any irrational fear like fear of spiders or snakes. Cockroaches are nasty and I don't like maybugs (or June Bugs, as I believe they are called in the States), simply because they are both large and scratchy. I don't know if squeamishness counts. I am inclined to feel very faint at the sight of, or even the mention of accidents or operations. A technique that claims to have some good success with fear of snakes and spiders and so on is Emotional Freedom Technique. It's a non-invasive technique which is easily learned and you apply it to yourself. It simply involves tapping on certain points on the face, chest and hand whilst repeating a carefully chosen phrase. After each 'round' (which only takes a couple of minutes or so), one evaluates one's level of fear and repeats the tapping until it is down to zero. I have watched several videos of the technique being used and I believe that they were genuine, unedited videos. In one, a man in his forties overcomes a quite obvious fear of water that stemmed from an event in his childhood, in another, a lady from the audience with a fear of rats is cured in 15 minutes to the extent that she strokes rats in a cage without fear. I am well aware that such videos can be faked by actors and I was on the lookout for signs of such trickery but detected none. Full instructions and a wealth of notes and comments are available online for free. One can buy videos which show EFT in use and discuss it from the point of view of a therapist who wishes to use it but there is no need to do so if one is learning it for oneself. The website is http://www.emofree.com (note that I am not an affiliate or anything!) and I would encourage anyone with a fear of snakes, spiders, water or anything like that to take a look. I have certainly found the technique useful and calming when dealing with anxieties about medical treatment and at meeting people. I would say 'I don't know how it works, but it seems to be effective.' It may be a kind of self-hypnosis but I think that tests have indicated that it is more than that. It certainly does not involve putting yourself at the hands of a therapist (though there are therapists): one is always in complete control oneself!

Spiders!!! Oh my gosh!! My fear gets worse as I get older too! It's ridiculous!! I watched Arachnophobia when it came out at the movies & it just grossed me out, but I can't even stand to see a picture of a spider now!! I can't leave the channel on when there's a spider on tv!! Ick!!
