I have decided to start a series of posts about some of the places that we have visited and enjoyed. I have toured the Mark Twain House at Nook Farm twice. It has been much upgraded since the first time I visited. Now there is a wonderful museum which includes a film about Mark Twains life here in Connecticut.
It was in this home that he wrote some of his greatest works and also where he suffered some of the greatest losses of his life. It is right next door to the Harriet Beecher Stowe House and in that time period, Nook Hill was a center of the literatee in Hartford.
The house is visited on a guided tour. Several options are offered. We chose to go on the tour guided by one of his best friends. You can choose between several characters that take people on tours and you can check the schedule on their website. It goes from top to bottom of the house and takes about an hour and a half. We went at Christmas time so it was particularly festive in the house.
If you have any interest in Samuel Clemens, you will find this tour very entertaining and will learn a lot about not only him but the times he lived in.

It is beautiful and it still has a very nice piece of land with it. Valuable real estate right in downtown Hartford.

It is done to the time period. Most of the pieces do not belong to the family but it is decorated beautifully. The desk from this house where he did his writing is at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, I saw it there.

It is an important piece of American literary history. He was a fascinating man with an amazing sense of the ridiculous.

It is for all that very much a family home and he had his "man cave" where he could escape way at the top of the building.

No, it is volunteers who take the role of his best friend, his servant and other people in his lfe and assume the character. None of his friends are alive for sure.

I saw the signs for that one time when driving through the area. I do think that would be a great place to visit.

He is the quintessential American writer and it just feels right to visit his house. I also visited his grave in Elmira NY.
