How Do You Clean A Really Pet Soiled Carpet?

I'm in a bind after 5 months of pretty serious depression, I'm getting ready to go on a trip to see family, and my three cats and dog have really made a mess of the carpet. I am checking on the web to find good ways to clean up dried poop (I found some behind a chair in the corner, and I really can't leave the house so messy when the pet sitters come to take care of my animals. I have a carpet shampoo machine, but it just doesn't seem to really pull the junk out of the carpet well enough. I've used the commercial soaps with it, and am just about out of the "high traffic" stuff that I use on really bad stains. On top of that, the cats pull the fibers up, and I end up walking around "trimming" the carpet so that the pile looks right. Anyone have any ideas to help me? I can't get the commercial machine because I don;t have a car, and the cleaners are too much money. Help!
