He played stupid to avoid prison - now he regrets that decision

A Danish man has gotten in trouble because he lied during his psychiatric evaluation. He committed a robbery and when he was caught, he was interviewed by a psychiatrist and a psychologist tested his IQ. He has a normal IQ, but he made a lot of mistakes on purpose, and his IQ test showed that his IQ was 58. People who are mentally ill or people who have an IQ below 85 generally don't receive a prison sentence in Denmark. They get treatment instead. Instead of staying in prison many of them stay in an institution. The court decided that this man had to stay in a group home for people with special needs. At first he was happy, because he managed to avoid prison, but now he has realized that he has made a big mistake. His stay in the group home doesn't end after a certain number of years like a prison sentence. It ends when they consider him ready to leave. That can take many years, and he has no idea when he will be able to leave. Some people stay in those group homes for 30 or 40 years. He has admitted that he lied and he has asked for another IQ test, but his request was denied.

He thought that he was so smart when he lied, but he didn't know the rules (he didn't know that they would be able to keep him as long as they want) . That was a big shock.

@LadyDuck Yes exactly. If he had read the details of our "psychiatric treatment sentences" he would have known the truth. It is easy to find that information online, but he never checked the details.

@Porcospino There is something that my husband used to say "it is what you do not know that it's dangerous". It is exactly what this man did not know that put him in a very bad situation.

That's like the jokes we tell about the Swedes! I thought Danes were too clever for that ;-)

@Torunn We usually say that some things are better in Sweden - they have better neighbors There is also a joke about Norway and Sweden: "If you are in doubt if a person is from Norway or from Sweden, it is always best to ask if they are Norwegian. If they are Norwegian and you ask them if they are Swedish, they will get insulted. If they are Swedish and you ask them if they are Norwegian, they will get flattered"

@Porcospino Maybe he's part Swedish? I suppose you have jokes about the Swedes too? Like "what's the only thing the Swedes have that the rest of the Nordic countries don't?"

Opps that’s a big mistake on his part. He might be used for experiments since he was diagnosed to be having mental issues. He will now have to be evaluated and will be declared sane or insane at the whim of the doctors and not by judges anymore.

Yes, he is stuck there now. There is no limit, they can keep him as long as they consider it necessary. When he lied in his test he didn't know what the consequences would be (that they are able to keep him for years) so he was shocked when he discovered the truth.

@Porcospino if he would be mentally stable then he would have to endure living with those that are real crazy people and he would have to endure them there. There will come a time that he will be like them

@rsa101 In the article he said about the other people: "Those people are crazy, I don't belong here. I have nothing in common with them" Some of the others have very severe problems, and I understand why he doesn't feel that he belongs there, but he is stuck there anyway.

@Janet357 Each prisoner has their own cell. They share bathrooms etc, but there is only one bed in each cell..

I also wonder how he managed to do that. He talked to the psychiatrist and the psychologist as well, but neither of them discovered that he was faking.

@Nevena83 Yes, I thought that they would consider his personality and his way of interacting and not just the IQ result, but I guess they didn't do that since they believed him.

He thought he had found the perfect solution when he lied in the test. Now he regrets it of course, but it is too late. They can keep him in that place for years.

Yes, he did. He didn't think about the consequences and and now he is stuck in that institution. He tried to convince them to do another test on him, but they said no.
