Yap, I have encountered it. Indian user talked about a "chain". We had misunderstood each other. She said the Indian wears chain in their neck. I replied back that in our country only dogs wear chain. I don't understand that it's their culture to wear gold chain.

@Janet357 She told me that I am the only that I didn't understand it. So I admitted that she's better than me.

Yes, since we all come from all over on here it can be hard to understand everyone. We also have different writing styles which also affects how we read and understand other people’s discussion long with culture.

not so much language as structure.

I have seen a few posts that I didn't understand, but in most cases the language barrier hasn't been a problem.
Sometimes I am in doubt if a person is joking on not, especially if I don't know them well (online) I usually use an emoji when I joke. I like to joke and I like to use irony, those things can be misunderstand, so I add an emoji in order to indicate that I am joking.

@Janet357 Yes, I hope so Sometimes it is easy to tell that people are joking, and sometimes I am not completely sure if they are serious or not.

There are many who are not fluent with the language and that includes Native speakers as well.
